In That Mornin' is a contemporary setting incorporating texts from the Spirituals, "You May Bury Me In De East" and "Gable Blow Your Trumpet." Both of these Spirituals mention the trumpet figure in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and the Book of Revelations. These Spirituals and the scriptural references let us know that though our bodies be buried, our souls will rise and be changed In That Mornin' when God sends Gable to blow his trumpet. This emotional and exciting setting offers a modal challenge with dramatic results. The articulations in this piece are very important. The ensemble should feel the natural pulses of 6/8 and 4/4. The ensemble should feel the syncopations throughout this piece. The rhythmic feel of trumpets is intentional and happens often throughout this piece. The ensemble should reserve too much vibrato when singing the dissonant harmonies written in this piece. This piece is a perfect selection for festivals, honor choirs, concerts, recitals and funerals! I hope this piece will become a part of your year-round choral literature!
