In The Gloaming was originally written in 1877. "In the gloaming" would be translated today to mean "In the twilight". It was written as a slow chorale in AMajor, and was, in total, 20 bars long.
This grade V piece starts with an Adagio introduction, led by the trumpets, followed by a motivating Allegro section, driven by the snare drum. After that, a reflective Largo section is introduced, beginning with a trombone trio, before adding in the rest of the band at a key change. It ends back at the Allegro, where snare drum once again pushes the piece to the end. A very challenging, but rewarding piece for wind band.
