Bruce Faulconer composed IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, as one of the pieces for his musical play, SCENES IN THE DARK, in October 1992 for soprano, alto, tenor, bass, piano, and chamber orchestra, having collaborated with lyricist David Arthur. This is the solo piano and vocal version of the piece. The music and songs also appear in the feature film of the same title. The film won a First Prize in the Worldfest Houston International Film Festival in 1993. The song evokes a playwright - composer lying awake at night, unable to rest. The sleeplessness is brought on by wrestling with creativity unhinged, overwhelming pressures, and endless possibilities.
