"In The Purple Chill" is a level 4+ piece for SATB a cappella choir. It is an excellent work for high school, college, and community choirs. "In The Purple Chill" is one of three pieces from a collection using texts by Bliss William Carman (1861 - 1929). Carman's poem, "At Sunrise" (1922) beautifully paints the picture of the sun rising with all of its colors and glory, taking over the stars in silence, as a new day is being created with all of its hope and splendor. However, the full arrival of the day comes with pointed sorrows as the splendors of the sunrise must gray and disappear. The piece is set using shimmering harmonic colors to create a sense of peace and hopefulness for the new day, and a tinge of sadness as the sunrise fades. The title is extracted from the first line of the poem: "Now the stars have faded in the purple chill." Voice part recordings are available for purchase at brianscottstorymusic.com.
