Bruce Faulconer composed INTERFACE IV, for Clarinet, Tape, and Bass Clarinet in 1979 during his residency at The Ohio State University, as a Post Doctoral Fellow. He completed this final manuscript copy at that time as well, by hand, using vellum and India ink. Interface IV was also commissioned by the Voices of Change at Southern Methodist University where the first performance took place February 8, 1980. The Tape part of this work was composed and realized by Faulconer at The Ohio State University Electronic Music Studio.
INTERFACE IV is set for Clarinet, Tape (Reel to Reel), and Bass Clarinet. The aleatoric feel of the composition and the electronic sounds are enhanced by use of multiphonics in the two clarinet parts. The difficulty level is suggested for performance by advanced High School, College, and Professional instrumentalists.
