Island Sunrise was inspired by a photo taken by George Hummel of the sunrise on Bull Island, South Carolina. A longtime friend, his stunning photo captures the essence of a barren, uninhabited island as the light of day slowly emerges. The low flute choir expresses the undulating sensation of the emerging sun on the gentle island waters and beach. The music was a commission led by Deborah Rebeck Ash as director of the Lower Michigan Low Flute Ensemble who performed the premiere.
