This new high-spirited clarinet choir arrangement of Gioacchino Rossini's Italian in Algiers Overture from his opera L'Italiani in Algieri is much loved by wind players. It is perfect for recitals, graduations, special events, and educational outreach performances. The arrangement can be played by college groups and professional ensembles. I have included alternate Bb clarinet parts in lieu of a missing Eb clarinet or Alto clarinet. I have also included a Contra Alto Clarinet part as an alternate or in addition to the Contrabass Clarinet part.
Italian in Algiers was the first Rossini overture I ever heard or played. We performed it in my Texas All-Region Band my sophomore year in high school, and the piece blew me away. I have been a fan of it ever since. This piece taught me how to play a slowly-building crescendo (the Rossini crescendo), how to exaggerate dynamics, and how to play really, really fast. I hope you enjoy this lively setting for clarinet choir.
