A Recipe for Hot Cross Buns is a light-hearted informance piece designed for beginning band. Using the familiar melody of “Hot Cross Buns,” students explore key musical concepts—including pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, tone color, and articulation—by presenting the tune in a series of intentionally “incorrect” culinary-themed variations before finally performing it “just right.” Guided by a humorous narrator script, the performance blends music education with storytelling, audience engagement, and plenty of laughs, making it an ideal showcase for young musicians.

Forge Master explores metal as both material and metaphor. Inspired by digital artwork of the same name, the piece focuses on impact and friction, shaping the sound through force, resistance, and sustained pressure.

All instruments in the quartet are metallic. Struck passages emphasize weight, precision, and fracture, while bowed sounds draw out unstable resonance and overtones like shimmering heat waves. This work is driven by ostinati which create texture and transformation, allowing brilliance to emerge from darker textures.

The brake drum is used by all four players and is an anchor throughout, while the higher metal sounds create imagery of flying sparks and shrapnel. What is left at the end is not a resolution, but resonance, as if the metal is still ringing long after the work is done. 

This work was inspired by and is dedicated to my dear friend, Zoey Schlemper.

Percussion Quartet

In Finnish folklore, Linnunrata means "the path of the birds" and refers to the Milky Way. It was believed to be the celestial route taken by migratory birds to reach the distant land of peace and eternal summerLintukoto. The stars of the Milky Way were thought to reflect this great path in the sky, marking a spiritual or mystical passage between worlds.
Lintukoto is a mythical, idyllic land at the edge of the world, often depicted as a warm, peaceful paradise where birds go for the winter. It was imagined as a haven free from sorrow, suffering, and cold. In some versions of the myth, it is also a place where souls might travel after death, making it a kind of Finnish otherworld or afterlife.
The sielulintu is a mythic soul-bird believed to guard or carry a person's soul. In ancient Finnish belief, during sleep or at death, a person's soul could leave the body in the form of a bird. The sielulintu would ensure the soul returned safely or guide it to the afterlife. It was common to carve soul-bird figures into cradles to protect newborns' souls.
Together, these concepts form a symbolic cosmology: the soul (sielulintu) travels via the Milky Way (Linnunrata) to reach a peaceful, otherworldly realm (Lintukoto)illustrating the Finnish reverence for nature, birds, and the mysteries of life, death, and the soul's journey.

This piece uses key signatures to signify where the listener is in terms of cosmic space (in relation to the Finnish folk legend). The key of C Major is used to represent earth, while the key of G-flat major represents Lintukoto, or the after-life. The Linnunrata, or the pathway between earth and the after-life is represented by a whole tone scale, using the first three notes of the C major scale (CDE) and the first three notes of the G-flat major scale (Gb, Ab, Bb). 

This is a great way to introduce singers to multi-meter music and aleatoric music. Canonic and unison singing and a supportive piano part make this seemingly difficult piece very accessible!

Laminar flow is a scientific phenomenon that occurs when a liquid is flowing so fast, it appears to be frozen in time. This happens when the flowing liquid has a completely smooth path with no interruptions. This piece relies heavily on repeated patterns that only change slightly. The changes are usually made when an individual saxophone is playing quietly and another saxophone is at its loudest point, producing the effect of moving quickly while also appearing to be holding still.

Ornithological Oddities 2

“Twas in the Moon of Wintertime” (also known as “Jesous Ahatonnia”, or “The Huron Carol”) was one of my favorite songs for years and I had always wanted to make an arrangement of it for choir. However, I did not realize that it has a long and very problematic history. Although it is often presented as a “Native American Christmas carol,” the text was written in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a French Jesuit missionary, as a tool for Christian conversion, not as an authentic Indigenous song. Over time, it has been romanticized, mistranslated, and framed in ways that misrepresent Native cultures and reinforce stereotypes rather than honoring real Indigenous musical traditions.

Less often discussed is that the common English version many of us know today (words written by Jesse Edgar Middleton in 1926) is also inauthentic and highly inappropriate. His text uses stereotypical tropes and further distances the piece from both its historical context and the cultures it was meant to represent.

For this arrangement, I chose to return to the source of the melody: a French folksong entitled “Une Jeune Pucelle” which is loosely based on an even older French melody: “Une Jeune Fillete”. By grounding the music in its true origins and adding secular English text about wintertime (thus  removing faux-Indigenous musical tropes from the 1926 version), my goal was to  present the piece with honesty and clarity.

This is about being reflective, responsible, and transparent with the music we perform and teach. I hope this arrangement invites conversation, learning, and a more thoughtful approach to repertoire, especially when it intersects with cultures that have been marginalized or misrepresented for centuries.

In Winter's Hour

A piece for unaccompanied choir and flute, that tells the story of a little bird growing up and leaving the nest. The flute is used to mimic the call of a wren, while also providing melodic and harmonic material. This piece is sure to tug at the heart strings of anyone who has raised a child, or has watched a child grow.
