Janiculum takes its name from two sources: the Janiculum Hill in Rome and the fourth movement of Ottorino Respighi's Pini di Roma. Both references evoke the grandeur and timeless presence of the Cupressus sempervirens, or Mediterranean cypress tree. Janiculum is written for Mary Pulanco.
Intended as an inviting meditation, Janiculum should be performed with little haste. Rubato is encouraged throughout, especially leading into and departing from breath marks. Breath marks in Janiculum serve a dual purpose: room to breathe and a brief pause, or lift. Janiculum takes an AB form. A successful performance will emphasize the difference of these two sections while maintaining a warm, inviting timbral palette.
