Massive thank you to Horns of the Heartland for commissioning and premiering this piece! This was written for the University of Nebraska-Omaha's Brass Day which featured Horns of the Heartland. This piece is semi-programmatic and I was thinking about how light reflects and refracts through crystals as I wrote this. It is of a collegiate or professional level difficulty due to just a few difficult points, but the overall effect is incredible to add to any horn choir performance!

Horn in F Sextet

An adaptation of the horn quartet, it was written at the request of a good friend after seeing the horn quartet. It is a grade 4 piece and is approximately 5 minutes long and makes for a good piece for high schoolers, collegiate players, or even professional groups. Originally written for a senior recital, "To Higher Peaks" and was originally written as a testament to the best of what the horn has to offer before being adapted for a brass quintet and the strengths of each instrument within. The composer was artistically inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the development matches the climb it takes to scale one. Written at a level for all skill sets and ages, "To Higher Peaks" hopes to push performers to their next level of playing and it is dedicated to a teacher who does just that.

Brass Quintet

Hart's first horn quartet, it was written for a good friend's senior recital and dedicated to a beloved horn professor. It is a grade 4 piece and is approximately 6 minutes long and makes for a good piece for high schoolers, collegiate players, or even professional groups. Originally written for a senior recital, "To Higher Peaks" strives to live up to the beauty of horn writing and lives as a testament to the best of what the horn has to offer. The composer was artistically inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the development matches the climb it takes to scale one. Written at a level for all skill sets and ages, "To Higher Peaks" hopes to push performers to their next level of playing and it is dedicated to a teacher who does just that.

A song cycle for Baritone Voice, Horn, and Piano based on texts by Walt Whitman. The four movements of the cycle outline one perspective on the American Civil War. The first movement describes the values and climate of mostly northern, and at that time, western Americans. The second and third showcase two different snapshots of the war from the soldier’s view in the day to day. The text for the final movement, “I Hear America Singing,” was actually written before the civil war, but in this context is employed as a return to life and rejoice that the war is over.

This version is based off of the original for Baritone.

Trio Variations is written for a smaller ensemble within a wind quintet- horn, clarinet, and bassoon. Because of this, it works well for wind quintet's that want to feature different members of the group within a larger performance or dedicated musicians that can't come up with a full wind quintet. It's opening theme is a jaunty tune full of energy and over the course of several variations, the melody develops and explores new emotions and tonalities. It covers many styles with many solo moments for each instrument and fluctuates between homophonic and imitative writing. The difficulty of this piece is well suited for college or professional ensembles if done in full, but also works for high school students if a movement or two is removed, which I fully support doing.
The recording is mostly from the premiere, and one movement was cut due to a short rehearsal period. That movement has been replaced by a MIDI/audio replication in this recording.

Mixed Trio

"Summer Eve" is a duet for marimba and vibraphone that traverses a very storied evening of friends in the summer. Its fun, light melodies grow darker with the evenings shadows and eventually comes to a pleasant close.

Multiple Percussion Duet

An unaccompanied solo for horn based off of the classic variation form. With a brief break between each variation (for the performer to make an adjustments necessary or keep going), this piece explores the whole range of the horn on a call that is idiomatic of the famous horn calls. Originally performed by Logan Tekolste. More in-depth program notes on my website.
