Cello Quintet

Wingate's Third Symphony is an ear-catching musical embodiment of the famous irrational number Pi (3.14 etc.), and was created by transforming this number's first 3000 digits into notes via pitch class integers. The striking result surprisingly sounds like a traditional symphonic work rather than a random string of musicalized numerical digits. The four contrasting movements are a tour de force of imaginative orchestration, and feature star-making turns from the horn section, whose '3-1-4' theme dominates the score. The Pi Symphony is part of the composer's 'Irrationals Trilogy' (including the String Quartet No. 2 'Phi', and the Piano Sonata No. 1 'Euler's Sonata'), and is part of Wingate's larger tonal serialism project. A unique string quartet based on the irrational number known as Phi (1.618 etc.), the Golden Ratio Quartet uses the first 2000 digits of this number as pitch-class integers, crafting an entire 20-minute chamber work from this enormous set of ordered pitches. This ostensibly mathematical foundation counterintuitively creates a musical edifice of surprisingly emotive qualities.
