Although originally recorded by Eddie Floyd in 1966, Knock on Wood has remained popular thanks to covers by artists such as Otis Redding, David Bowie, and Eric Clapton. Featuring powerful and solid scoring, this dynamic version for developing players has a brief written or ad lib solo for alto sax and is based on the swing-shuffle hit recorded by Amii Stewart in 1979. Highly recommended!

Knock on Wood

In 1987 Miles Davis took home the Grammy award for best jazz instrumental soloist for his performance of this composition by Marcus Miller. From the album of the same name, Tutu is creatively arranged here for full big band in a sultry hip-hop fusion style similar to the original. Featuring distinctive modal style harmonies, and a few twists and turns, and solos for trumpet (naturally) and alto sax, this is sure to be a standout selection for any ensemble!

Your jazz band players and audiences will dig the poppin' rhythmic figures, the funky style, outstanding ensemble passages and the high energy. It lays well at around 120 bpm and has written or improvised solos for alto/bari, tenor, trumpet, and trombone. Electric piano will sound great on the funky piano introduction, the lead trumpet range is up to written high C, and optional auxiliary percussion, flute and vibes parts are included. Highly recommended! You guessed it, Alligator Boogaloo  is a funky rock chart with a boogaloo groove played around 136 bpm. It's a simple blues with a great melody introduced by alto and trumpet. Alligator Alley

Originally a #1 hit for Toto in the early 1980s, and recorded again by the group Weezer, this powerful rock anthem features a distinctive groove and memorable lines. In this chart it's given a contemporary spin while maintaining the feel and drive of the original. There's solo space for trumpet. Highly recommended!

Africa

The groove is funky rock in this chart on the signature Wes Montgomery tune. At about 140 bpm, the solos are suggested and written for guitar and for any C, B-flat, E-flat, or bass clef instrument for flexibility. The solo section can easily be opened up to include as many soloists as desired. The ensemble gets plenty of exposure as well, both behind the soloists and as a featured partner. Quality chart!

Originally released by the Electric Light Orchestra in 1978, this rock hit has been thrust back into the limelight thanks to its inclusion on numerous movie soundtracks, notably the opening sequence of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." A great-sounding chart playable by developing ensembles!

Mr. Blue Sky

Composed for the Japanese anime television series Cowboy Bebop, this tune has taken on a life of its own. John Wasson's driving Latin funk version was written for his Strata Big Band and recorded on the album Chronicles. It features the quirky melody, sizzling brass punches, solo space for alto sax, and shows off every section of the band. A real screamer!

Just like the title, this funk/rock chart on the Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars megahit is loaded with powerful energy! The tempo is around 112 bpm, there's a written alto sax solo provided, and it goes all out, all the time. Joe Zawinul's perennial jazz favorite gets a really accessible and solid treatment in this arrangement that is modeled after the legendary Cannonball Adderly Quintet recording from 1966.  The happy, gospel-rock style is one that is always fun to hear and play and now young jazz players can experience it in this easiest version published to date. It's scored for full jazz ensemble instrumentation, but will sound full and complete with a minimum of 3 saxes (AAT), 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums. Highly recommended!

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Okay, it's chicken time again! Kris Berg's highly successful series of "chicken" charts have proven to be funk favorites year after year. Party Peeps is very cool with its lower-voices groove and funky melodic lines. The solos are written or improvised for tenor sax 1 and trumpet 2. Also features an effective solo for drums over stop-time horns. Plus, it's playable with optional reduced instrumentation, and there are optional parts included for flute and vibes. Highly recommended!
