Caribbean Fantasy on Joy to the World

A 17-minute dramatic that tells a true story of a maritime incident on
  Lake Michigan, told through the actual words of the principle characters's
  son taken from 1937 Library of Congress field recordings, and through a sea
  shanty composed by an friend of those involved. The audience participates by
  singing the one-line refrain of the shanty several times throughout the
  course of the story.

A journey from darkness to brilliant light.  Works well as a straight concert number with piano, but designed as an opening, solemn processional for a Christmas concert with chorus and orchestra (or band).  For a large choral department, multiple choirs can be featured (1st verse Men's Chorus, 2nd verse Women's Chorus or Children's Choir in unison, 3rd verse Mixed (SATB) chorus, 4th verse all choirs.

For a departmental joint concert, this can be performed with the band AND orchestra AND chorus(es) by renting the string parts from the publisher (jesseayers.com), with the band and the orchestral winds &amp; percussion playing from the band parts.  

This piece seeks to portray this progression from gloom to joy, opening very darkly, followed by the men's voices offstage yearning for hope. This is followed by successive statements of the Veni tune, while the choir literally moves from dark to light, as the singers process, bearing candles, from the rear of a darkened auditorium to the light of the stage. As with many settings of Advent and Christmas music, the composer has also quoted related material. During the processional, the orchestra segues from Veni to What Wondrous Love, a reflection on the Advent of Christ. At the end of the processional, as the women sing the second verse, the sopranos and first violins intone the carol What Child Is This? ( Greensleeves ) as a descant to the Veni tune. Since the music is moving from dark to light, the brightest moment of the O Come hymn, the four big chords that open the refrain with the text "Rejoice! Rejoice," is withheld until the closing bars. As the choir sings these words for the first time, the brass immediately sound a fanfare on Crown Him with Many Crowns , a reminder that the babe in the manger is the Lord of Lords, and King of Kings.

Akedah

This is the version for band AND chorus.  There is a separate version for band alone (no chorus). The choral books are sold separately. Choral parts are available either for SATB or SSAA.

A dramatic setting of the 15th-century hymn "Veni, Veni Emmanuel" ("O Come, O Come Emmanuel") that depicts the progression from darkness to light, despair to hope, found in the modern English translations of the text found in most hymnals. Each variation becomes successively brighter and builds to a uplifting, victorious climax.  The work also includes various "cameo" appearances of other Advent and Christmas related hymns, such as "What Wondrous Love Is This,"  "What Child Is This" ("Greensleeves"), and near the end, a fanfare flourish on "Crown Him with Many Crowns."

An exciting, surround-sound, programatic symphony in three movements with rhythmic drive and tight motivic and harmonic development plus a few special effects.  The entire second movement is an extended, lightly accompanied euphonium solo, great for allowing an exceptional euphonium or trombone player to shine.  For an advanced band ready for a challenge.

Private Eye Prowl

A suite of four old hymns commonly sung in the Southern U.S.  in the 1900s:  Softly and Tenderly, There Is a Fountain-Are You Washed-Nothing but the Blood, When I Survey (the Wond'rous Cross, Amazing Grace with lines from numerous other hymns interleaved.

I. SOFTLY AND TENDERLY
A quiet setting expressing the longing of the Savior for us to "come home." Beginning with unison men over a simple Copland-esque accompaniment, it contains both the traditional harmonization familiar to audiences, as well as some brief, striking sojourns to remote tonalities used to underscore texts such as "though we have sinned He has mercy and pardon."

II. THERE IS A FOUNTAIN  ARE YOU WASHED
An a cappella medley of the title hymn along with "Are You Washed?" and "Nothing But The Blood." It begins slowly and softly with unison women singing the opening phrase "There is a fountain." Later, the tempo picks up into a camp-meeting style for the other two hymns.

III. WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS
A cappella. Austere and stately. The first verse is set with the traditional harmonization, the second verse is dramatically re-harmonized to paint the text "See from His head, His hands, His side."

IV. AMAZING GRACE COLLAGE
A joyous, celebratory, up-tempo setting that weaves numerous quotes of other hymns into the fabric of John Newton's beloved text.  Example:
