Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is a chorale from J. S. Bach's
cantata Herz un Mund und Tat und Leben ("Heart and
Mouth and Deed and Life"), BWV 147. The original scoring
was for trumpet, oboes, two violins, basso continuo, and
chorus. The melody is instantly recognizable and has been
featured in countless films, recordings, and TV shows
including Downtown Abbey, The Minority Report, The
Muppet Show, the album Switched-On Bach by Moogsynthesizer
artist Wendy Carlos, and the song "Lady Linda"
by The Beach Boys. It is also found on most Top-100 lists of
All-Time Classical Music Favorites.
Two arrangements are included:
The Complete Version is the entire cantata and is just over
four minutes long. This version is perfect for worship services
and recitals.
The Short Version is a much simpler arrangement that is
ideal for Weddings. It conveniently repeats sixteen measures
so it can be as short as one minute (perhaps for a candle
lighting ceremony), and may be repeated as needed if the
processional takes longer than expected, or for any
situation where you need to vamp.
