This is one of Bach's most beautiful and best-known melodies. It is from his cantata 147. Bach wrote perhaps 300 as part of his job in various positions as a choirmaster. It was written in 1723 for Advent while he was working in Leipzig. The original scoring was for four vocal soloists, a four-part choir, and a baroque instrumental ensemble including oboes, strings, and continuo. The new common title of this piece comes from a piano transcription by Dame Myra Hess with an English transcription written in 1926.
