You are the candle that lights the whole world,
And I am an empty vessel for your light.

There are many people in my life who are the light to me. Those who silently and perhaps
unknowingly light up my world. While reading The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks, I
ran across this couplet and it seemed an appropriate text to honor beautifully bright souls.
The candle represents the source of light and love, a candle that shines without prejudice - enabling it
to light the whole world. The empty vessel creates an image of someone who is ready to receive. But
what is the empty vessel receiving? It is receiving the light and love of what is both human and divine.
I love the image of an empty vessel (an empty cup, an empty mind, an empty page) as it allows for the
heart and soul to be filled without expectation of what it is being filled with.
May we all honor those in our lives who are the candles.
