The title of this tune comes from weather folklore that states that the color of the sky at various times of day can warn of impending storms. A red sky in the morning is viewed as a forebear of band things. A red sunrise means that good weather has already passed, and that a low pressure system is making it’s way in, warning us of bad weather approaching.
The melody for the tune is taken directly from Red Sky At Night Sailor’s Delight, it’s partner song. This time the melody is moved up to C Dorian, making the tune sound more like a pirate theme and less like a calming lullaby.
The entire song uses only the first six notes of the Concert B-flat scale, making it a perfect song for beginning bands looking to branch out from method books and into more serious band literature. All wind players have the opportunity to play the melody at some point throughout the song. The song uses 10 unique percussion parts, but is playable with as little as 6 of these parts, as the optional parts add to the song but don’t significantly detract from the overall performance if they can’t be performed.

In 1874 the Dakota Territory was the site of a massive Gold Rush.  The Gold Rush got its start with the Custer Expedition and continued through the next few years.  This Gold Rush happened despite the area being recognized as a Native American Territory (the Sioux) and was technically illegal to prospect for gold.  This didn't deter fortune seekers, who still flocked to the area in an attempt to locate their share of the precious metal.  The whole Gold Rush was started by a small gold discovery near Custer, South Dakota and later larger deposits were found in the town of Deadwood.  The history of this area has been immortalized by the HBO series Deadwood.

Black Hills Gold Rush

Finding Peace is a lyrical song with inspiration taken from working with someone who was struggling with anxiety and depression.  Melanie Moushigian Koulauris said "It takes great courage to find inner peace. When you find forgiveness within yourself, you release deep rooted pain, bitterness, and worry that has been cluttering your heart and mind. When you realize it's time to let go and move on from painful past experiences, it is then you will be able to sit and enjoy the silence and stillness of your soul."  This song looks to find balance in a world of chaos, shutting out the noise of the world around us and finding happiness, peace and contentment within ourselves.  

Each instrument group within the band gets the melody at some point during the song, making this a great introduction to lyrical music for young concert bands.

Red Sky At Night Sailor's Delight

Phobia is a highly programmatic work that is born from a dream, more specifically, a nightmare. As the person lies down to sleep and drifts off (symbolized by the solo vibraphone at the beginning of the song) they drift into a restless sleep, worrying about their fears. We begin with the fear of the dark, where the person tosses and turns and gets increasingly restless due to the figures they think they see in the shadows. After a great deal of tossing and turning, their nightmare takes off, as they find themselves being chased by a faceless thing. They think they've escaped but find themselves facing the fear of being hunted by whatever is following them. After leaping off a ledge to escape the thing, the nightmare continues as they plunge beneath the water and need to face their fear of drowning in the sweeping waves. After surviving the rapids, they find themselves once again being chased by the "thing" before falling off a cliff and facing their fear of falling. As they fall seemingly forever, they see the face of rocks they are about to hit, and with tears in their eyes and sweat pouring from their forehead, the person wakes up bolt upright in their bed, having awoken just moments before crashing into the rocks below.

Phobia

Catatumbo lightning is a natural phenomenon that occurs in Venezuela at the mouth of the Catatumbo River.   The atmospheric conditions result in lightning storms occurring 140-160 nights a year.  These storms typically last for 9 hours, with as many as 40 lightning flashes per minute during the storms.  As a result of these storms this location is believed to be the most common location for lightning strikes in the world.

The song uses only the first six notes of the Concert B-flat scale and acts as a nice transition for beginning players from method books to concert band literature. All Brass and Woodwinds play one of the main melodies at some point during the song.  To make the "lightning" feel more spread out and random, the 3 cymbal parts are encouraged to have one player on stage left, one on stage right, and one in the rear center stage.

Catatumbo

A Phantasm is an apparition, and this song tells the story of a haunted house where these ghosts slowly come to life and roam the halls after the sun sets.  As the evening progresses these ghouls become more and more active, leading to an unhinged event as the specters play, dance, and spook anyone who happens to be there.  Suddenly the sun begins to rise and the Phantasms go back into hiding until darkness returns the next evening.
