This second movement from the suite The Soul Has Many Motions has a raw and brutal nature that will definitely stand out on any program. The exotic and at times savage sounds suggest wild dancing around a nomadic camp fire, complete with tambourine, multiple hand drums and harsh, biting winds. The harsh and aggressive nature of the work is sure to deliver an impact not soon forgotten!

The blue hour refers to the moment of day between twilight and complete darkness, a time of day known for its romantic, spiritual, ethereal qualities. The colors of fading light are beautifully reflected in sound by various instrumental combinations and textures. �Building to a brilliant climax, the brightest moment is reached before dissipating slowly into a warm, peaceful finish, as the light fades to darkness. A stunning work.

Hymn to a Blue Hour

The first piece for band at this grade level by this popular and most creative composer.  The concept of this fascinating work is to introduce percussionists to the idea that there are more imaginative ways to perform other than with the traditional percussion instruments. Using "found" percussion instruments in addition to creative wind parts, the piece creates a life of its own to the delight of musicians and audiences!

Foundry

A flash of musical lightning that will exhilarate listeners at all levels! �An infectious rhythmic pulse is created with alternating 4/4 and 7/8 measures that drives the work forward from start to finish. �Active percussion parts add to the overall appeal of this lively and very creative work!

Undertow

Inspired by a massive work of art in which steel rods are placed over a large expanse of desert, drawing lightning strikes and creating powerful man-made electrical storms. This work draws on the ancient impulse to summon nature's power and a strong feeling of barely contained energy ripples throughout, enhanced by using thunder sticks to create the sound of man-made thunder surrounding the audience.

Lightning Field

A delicate and sensitive work that creates an atmosphere of calm and repose.  Gently cascading lines seemingly float over colorful harmonies as flowing melodies create a sense of forward motion. A wonderful addition to the repertoire, readily accessible and immensely pleasing.

Sheltering Sky

This aggressive, high-energy work fuses relentless rhythmic drive with industrial textures and intense dynamic contrasts. Mackey's first Grade 3 in years, this piece showcases his signature blend of cinematic tension and mechanical precision.

Teeth of the Mechanism

Modal melodies and syncopated rhythms of Middle Eastern music with percussive African drumming bring about a striking blend of musical cultures.  The central focus is the pulse of the djembe, an hourglass-shaped drum played with bare hands that's a cultural instrument of West African countries.  The groove of the djembe combined with quirky rhythms throughout create an impression not soon forgotten.

Strange Humors

This terrific work is a wonderful adaptation of the middle movement of the larger work Wine-Dark Sea: Symphony for Band. It's meant to represent the song of the beautiful and immortal nymph Kalypso who saves Odysseus, falls in love with him, and ultimately loses him. The music is very expressive, with quiet moments of tenderness that swell to moving climaxes, finally subsiding to close with a moving touch of sadness and loss.

This Cruel Moon

A concert march unlike any march you've heard before!  While most marches can be categorized by traditional performance traits, the best description here is "angry!"  The sheer power and aggressive nature of the music brings a somewhat evil element and entirely new perspective to traditional marches.  Explosive!

Xerxes

This zany and energetic work is perfect for adding a lighter touch to your concert. An active percussion section, fun extended techniques, mutes, and abundant energy make this piece a blast! The composer dedicates this work to Frank Ticheli because, at some points, it sounds like he wrote it!

Let Me Be Frank With You

This striking adaptation has all the intensity and drama of the original. The powerful opening creates high drama, as if mighty forces gather to prepare for battle. Once assembled, the music takes on a quieter but more suspenseful nature, the tension building as the forces grow close. Concluding in a virtual firestorm of sound and fury, all the forces of winds, percussion and brass combine for a breathtaking finish.

Until the Scars

Uplifting and encouraging, this music has an attitude! From the opening multi-phonic saxophones to fluttered tongued winds and crashes of cymbals, it's strong and defiant music with a purpose. Dedicated to the United Sound program, it's a way of saying "thanks" for making so many students feel special and strong.

Snarl

The story of this work begins with a tragedy, but that's not where it ends. Although it commemorates a specific catastrophe, the piece is not programmatic. Instead, it's a meditation on grief, transcending elegizing a singular horrific event and instead representing how we cope with all tragedies. Beginning with the peacefulness of a lullaby, the piece takes a simple motive and transports it through a series of emotions that include denial, shock, fury, and anguish before finding acceptance. Throughout, conflicting harmonies present an internal turbulence that peaks in a climactic wail of agony bordering on rage. Although the ending projects a return to peace, it is left incomplete with the final gesture of a single muted trumpet rising from the silence in a bright flash only to be suddenly extinguished. - from program notes by Jacob Wallace

Set in two short movements, this musical ghost story aesthetically captures the spirit of tsukumogami, old household objects that have attained a spirit and consciousness in Japanese folklore.

Haunted Objects

The atmosphere of courtly intrigue and suspense is created from the very beginning with soft murmuring whispers that introduce the unfolding drama. Ripples of sound grow and spread, rising in intensity as the import of a looming pronouncement finally erupts in a dazzling display of musical ferocity.

The cycle is inspired by a passage in the Odyssey in which Odysseus, shipwrecked and near death, washes up on the shore of an island belonging to the nymph Kalypso. Homer's telling treats the ensuing interlude as just another bit of exotic travelogue, one of many adventures on Odysseus' long journey home; these three songs imagine what it meant to Kalypso herself, and are sung in her voice.
