"Joyful, Joyful: Fanfare and Reflection (for concert band) is based on Beethoven's timeless melody of "Ode to Joy" which he encapsulated in his Ninth Symphony--a full orchestral masterpiece first unveiled in 1824. As the title suggests, this piece opens stridently with a fanfare, segues to a slower reflective section restating the theme in its purest lyrical form, then returns to the original fanfare. Bands of medium difficulty ability (3-3.5) will enjoy the challenge of sweeping woodwind runs and varied articulations in the fanfare as well as more sensitive playing required in the reflective section.
