Barnstorming was a fad of the 1920s, when skilled pilots flew old World War I biplanes around the Midwest, landing on random farms. There they would charge the locals for airplane rides and perform thrilling airshows called "flying circuses." The juxtaposition of the exciting thrills and tremendous danger is the impetus for this piece. Orchestral performance parts are available via rental from the publisher.

Commissioned by a consortium of wind bands led by the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, this explores how love prevails through cosmic lore, social movements, and mercurial mythos. Each of the work's three movements connects a different instrumental soundscape to the concepts of earth, air, and fire, depicting a blossoming of kindness and hope for the future of our planet. Movements: I. Flower Power (c. 3:00) II. Star-Crossed (c. 4:00) III. Slow Burn (c. 3:00). Grade 4–5.

when the clouds break, Cait Nishimura (2020) 3'

Imagine staring up at a sky that is bright and sunny, but full of layers of big clouds. As the clouds shift and move overhead, the sunlight dances around the edges of the clouds and teases the release of its warmth. When the clouds finally break, the sun pours through the sky for just a brief and glorious moment before being hidden again. 

This experience is reflected musically in the harmonic tension and syncopated rhythms throughout this piece. The concept for when the clouds break came to me while improvising using three simple chords: G, D, and C, in a I-V-IV progression. I wondered if I could build a short piece around these chords, incorporating colourful suspensions and added tones throughout, only giving the pure form of each chord later in the piece as a long-awaited resolution (this moment occurs at rehearsal letter E). As I played around with these ideas, I was reminded of the moments of tension and release found both in nature and in the human experience.

This piece was released in 2020, when the COVID-19 global pandemic caused some pretty serious cloud cover over us all. My hope was to provide a brief moment of metaphorical sunshine to anyone who interacts with this piece.

When the Clouds Break

Brass Quintet

This work is titled after and based on Keith Taylor's poem Acolytes in the Bird-While, which explores the flora and fauna of Michigan and the struggle to persist in the face of climate change. It is written for an unconventional group of instruments that demonstrates their virtuosity while providing a platform for awareness of and education around environmental and climate justice. Each movement derives its title from Taylor's poem, drawing attention to pivotal lines in the poem's narrative. A 2024 Sousa-ABA Ostwald Composition Contest finalist. Commissioned by Hub New Music and premiered by Hub New Music and the University of Michigan Symphony Band on March 10, 2023.

The Bird-While

Inspired by the first of Hercules' twelve labors in Greek mythology. In one version, the Nemean lion lured heroes to their doom by appearing as a woman in distress. When the hero arrived at the lion's den, the woman became the lion again. Due to its golden fur, the lion was impervious to arrows – but the triumphant Hercules was able to defeat the lion with his bare hands. This would be the first of twelve trials that Hercules would complete on his path to becoming immortal.

Nemean Lion

Twelve works by four incredible composers exploring the intersections between music and art; each composer presents a mini-collection of art-centric pieces. Performers of different instruments can easily perform together – a trumpet player can play a duet with their saxophone friend, a hornist can play with oboe, and what's not to love about a tuba and flute combo? Named for the working title of the Stanley Kubrick classic film "2001: A Space Odyssey," this piece merges three very different but related ideas: one astronomical, one musical, and one deeply personal. The astronomical narrative is about how the solar system became what it is today through the chaotic mess of celestial mechanics and cosmic collisions. The second narrative deals with the use of musical grooves. The final narrative is about how the most chaotic and devastating moments in our normally groove-filled lives are what contribute most to shaping our personalities and help give us our own personal "rings of Saturn." Ardor

The final piece in a triptych inspired by three paintings, each related to autumn; Red is an interpretation of the intensely vibrant and fiery depiction of a red maple leaf in Georgia O'Keeffe's "The Red Maple at Lake George" (1926). The music references different associations with the color red, from the fiery and sassy to the robust and vibrantly radiant. Commissioned by the 12 member schools of the Atlantic Coast Conference Band Directors Association.

The musical ideas in this three-movement suite were inspired by the landscapes of Southern Oregon. The first movement represents the drive through the valley and up into the Cascade mountain range. The tender, emotionally charged music of the second movement reflects on the devastating effects of wildfires caused by climate change. In contrast, the third movement offers a playful, quirky finale depicting the abundance of adventure to be found in the Rogue Valley.

Valley Views

This piece explores some of the contrasting qualities of swarm behavior – viciousness, unpredictability, ambiguity, agitation – exhibited through the medium of a large swarm of string instruments. The size of the ensemble may range from one player per part to a full-sized orchestral string section with a proportional number of players per part.

The first in a triptych inspired by three paintings, each related to autumn; Falling Up is a reflection of Jackson Pollock's "Autumn Rhythm" (1950), a tangled sea of swirls of paint that merge into a few larger circular rings embedded in the painting. These rings become an organizing principle; the overall form of of this work consists of a series of rotations of the original thematic material, where the order, orchestration, and character of the material vary in each rotation. Commissioned by the 12 member schools of the Atlantic Coast Conference Band Directors Association.

Falling Up

One of a planned series of tone poems titled Cabinet of Curiosities, inspired by fantastic tales of curious natural specimens, archeological artifacts, and unique artworks that may or may not have any basis in reality. This piece is inpired by an awesome sight on Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition to Antarctica of 1907–09 which came within 112 miles of the South Pole – the farthest south reached at that time. The second in a triptych inspired by three paintings, each related to autumn; Evening Glow is inspired by a painting of the same name by 19th-century British painter John Atkinson Grimshaw. Yonder Come Day

Everything Beautiful, for full orchestra

Everything Beautiful (2025) sonically explores the following quote by Herman Melville: "Real strength never impairs beauty or harmony, but it  often bestows it, and in everything imposingly beautiful, strength has much to do with the magic." The work seeks beautiful moments in the small and intimate as well as the intense and bombastic, demonstrating that beauty manifests in myriad forms. Tender solo passages contrast with tutti grandeur in a conversation of strength versus power, what it might mean to impose beauty, and how we can illuminate the magic that bestows it in our everyday lives. Everything Beautiful was commissioned by the Contemporary Youth Orchestra in celebration of their 30th season. Many thanks to Kris Morron, Kim Deichler, the CYO team, and CYO's intrepid players for their steadfast belief in the power of new music and for premiering this work.
