Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope for String Orchestra, dedicated to Sam Copeland, a most kind and caring music teacher, is a work for young orchestra players to develop a multitude of skills. As the title suggests, colors and geometric shapes, represented by sound, will shift and merge and blend throughout. Set in A minor, with a visit to D minor, shifting between melodic and harmonic modes, players will experience dissonant and consonant sounds moving in and out constantly. Opportunities for tuning close intervals and frequent dovetailing will promote keen listening and ensemble. A simple waltz theme, shared in all sections of the orchestra, embodies dance-like movement as shapes are manipulated in the kaleidoscope. A rollicking theme in 5/4 time will challenge the players to phrase and count with renewed energy!
