Whether an achievement is big or small, celebrating can lift spirits and inject joy and happiness into our daily life. Celebrations bring people together by strengthening relationships and creating a sense of community while reinforcing successes and promoting well-being. This uplifting and energetic work will provide all players with a fun and challenging part. While Call for Celebration! makes an excellent concert opener, it can also provide any concert program with an engaging and entertaining experience for musicians and audience alike. The music maintains momentum through the key modulations, metric variety and exchanges of melodic material to each section.

We are right to show our thanks and appreciation to first responders and those who serve in the military – but our teachers are also vital to society. They dedicate their lives to educating, encouraging, and shaping future generations. Beyond the Call honors the teachers who have helped us learn more than we could ever imagine. Beyond the Call

This grade 4 concert work reflects humankind’s existence on Earth that spans many thousands of years, yet a single life lasts a relatively short time. Additionally, choices made in life, from daily habits to major milestones, significantly shape who we become and how the world will remember us. A Moment in the Light was commissioned by the KMEA District IV Band Directors Association, to remember colleagues who are gone but not forgotten. It is a musical homage to life’s brief journey and reflects challenges and triumphs encountered along the way. Beginning with a sense of innocence, the music proceeds with sections that represent growth, struggle, disappointment, determination, aspiration, achievement and, most importantly, love.

A Moment in the Light

During the course of our life we become close to many people. Colleagues, mentors, spouses and especially family all play an enormous role in our happiness, success and overall well-being. But the value of a best friend cannot be overstated. This type of friendship is built upon mutual caring, trust, loyalty and knowing that you have a person in your life that wants to hear from you, do things with you and simply be there for you, no matter what the situation. This person does not judge you but supports you during life's challenges and helps celebrate your triumphs. To have such a person in your life is priceless. They are irreplaceable.
If I Should Go was written to honor the memory of Bill Haynes, a music educator and conductor whose life tragically and senselessly ended in a car-jacking in 2016. Brant Karrick and Bill Haynes were very close friends beginning with their days in school together. The composer uses a musical warmth and vitality to reflect Bill's happy, kind and generous spirit, while dissonances portray the sadness and depression felt by losing a loved one. Danny Boy is quoted as it was a favorite tune of Haynes. Further inspiration for If I Should Go came from the poem of the same name, written by Joyce Grenfell, that helps us all to carry on with life after losing someone we cherish.

If I Should Go

Michael Praetorius (1571-1621), was the most famous as well as the most prolific German composer of his time.  "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming is the familiar English title for this German Christmas carol, "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen.  Praetorius harmonized the most common tune for the carol in 1609.  It speaks of a rose sprouting from the Tree of Jesse, the father of David.  This image was particularly popular in art from medieval times.  

This arrangement features three complete verse settings, each presenting a new variation.  It allows an opportunity for musical expression with rubato and dynamic contrast.   The setting
also features contrast in colors and instrumental choirs with both tutti and transparent scoring.

Lo, How a Rose

Kentuckians have long been proud of the rich and unique cultural heritage of their commonwealth. Kentucky is known for thoroughbred horses, horse racing, bourbon distilleries, bluegrass music, automobile manufacturing, tobacco and college basketball. The Bluegrass State also claims one of the most beautiful state songs of all, My Old Kentucky Home, published in 1853 by Stephen Foster. Unbridled Spirit! is a virtuosic fanfare that reflects the many spectacular Kentucky landscapes and the friendly, zealous character of her people, while giving the musicians a proper workout! Fanfare motives begin the piece and are soon shared among each section. A lilty main theme is introduced, followed by varied statements of My Old Kentucky Home. A boisterous coda leads to an exciting ending. Unbridled Spirit! is dedicated to the memory of legendary Kentucky band director Tom Brawner whose nearly 50 year career touched the lives of so many.

Unbridled Spirit!

An outburst is defined as a sudden release of strong emotion or a sudden outbreak of a particular activity. With constantly shifting and asymmetric time signatures, syncopated rhythms, and extended polychords, Outburst! wildly moves and grooves throughout the ensemble. Two thematic ideas begin the piece. The first is a short motivic burst in 58 time that is immediately imitated. The second, introduced by solo saxophone, is jazzy and in a 3+3+2 rhythmic grouping. Abrupt shifts of dynamics and textures continue and eventually lead to a contrasting joyous lyrical theme. A short recapitulation leads to a loud and final outburst of sound and energy.

Outburst!

If you enjoy Bayou Breakdown you may like this one too!  Foreshadowing themes to come, the music begins simply, with short, playful ascending and descending motivic spurts that randomly leap among each section. A short chorale phrase interrupts the excitement but quickly fades into a more dense scoring of the opening motives. A second chorale phrase leads to a transition that begins the main theme, first stated by solo trumpet, passed on to clarinet, then dished up for the entire ensemble. The quasi-pentatonic theme inspires accompanying counterpoint while the theme itself is augmented, mutated and modified throughout. A short rock groove transmogrifies the piece into the glorious music of J. S. Bach and one of his many organ masterpieces! During a musical repose the chorale theme, introduced earlier, is now stated in full by a woodwind choir. A recapitulation of the playfully quirky introduction ensues but quickly becomes agitated, now in minor, developing in a short, four-part fugue. The main theme returns, accompanied by the rock groove, once again leading to a joyous celebration inspired by Bach. The strong conclusion features a flurry of counterpoint followed by a cheeky little wink in the piccolo and tuba.

Mind Games

Echoes of an Era is a musical portrait representing a past where life for our ancestors was simpler and less frantic than it is today for us. Programmatic in nature, the piece opens with two expansive and sweeping themes, written in a cinematic style, that include many modulations. After passing through the entire ensemble, a transition follows into a lively setting of The Blue Juniata composed in 1844 by Marion Dix Sullivan. It was one of the most popular parlor and minstrel songs of the 19th century and the first commercial hit written by an American woman. A brief storm arrives out of nowhere but soon gives way to a toe-tapping hoedown featuring the traditional fiddle tune Fisher's Hornpipe. The two tunes combine in counterpoint and soon return to the initial opening themes followed by a massive Hollywood ending!  All players in the band have a fun and challenging part with some very special solos!

Echoes of an Era

Making an excellent concert/contest addition of a ballad, "The Parting Glass" is one of the most popular songs to originate from the Celtic lands of Scotland and Ireland.  First appearing in 1782, the song has many references to companionship and friendship, and that departure is only temporary as friends will be reunited.  This arrangement includes two complete statements of melody. The first is similar to how it may be sung with rubato and some freedom of tempo.  The second begins with low clarinets and counterpoint and builds to a strong tutti before ending quietly.

The Parting Glass

This could be the fanfare you are looking for!  From vast farmlands to large urban cities to many of the finest schools and universities in the world, the Midwest is truly the heart of America. The people are proud, hardworking, family oriented and have a zest for life. Cast in an ABA form, Heartland Zeal pays homage to these fine Midwestern qualities. Included are four main musical ideas; the first being rhythmic and the others melodic. A minimalistic style begins and ends the piece with multiple layers of boisterous, setting and ever-changing rhythms. The main themes soon follow and reflect the spirit, enthusiasm and tenderness of the region and the people. Heartland Zeal was commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association for the 2014 All-District Honor Bands.

Heartland Zeal

The term Celtic' generally refers to the unique languages and cultures of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, and Brittany. Known for many artistic innovations, including intricate stone carving and fine metalworking, the Celts contributed a wealth of music that remains very popular today. Much of Celtic music includes traditional instruments such as the fiddle, Celtic harp, Irish flute, tin whistle, uilleann pipes and the bodhran. Celtic music is based on these traditional instruments and traditional folk dances such as the jig, reel and hornpipe. Additionally, traditional folk ballads include some of the most beautiful and expressive melodies ever created. They are typically strophic in form where the melody is repeated for each verse.
Celtic Expressions consists of three large sections with two main melodic ideas. The first section features a spirited 6/8 jig with four 8-measure phrases, each repeated. The middle section features two complete phrases of the beautiful folk ballad "The Parting Glass," one of the most popular songs to originate from the Celtic lands of Scotland and Ireland. First appearing in 1782, the song has many references to companionship and friendship, and that departure is only temporary as friends will be reunited. The jig returns in the third section and is soon partnered with "The Parting Glass" to create an exciting flurry of counterpoint and a boisterous conclusion.  Celtic Expressions was commissioned by the Bowling Green (KY) High School Band to honor longtime director, Kevin Briley for his retirement.

Imagine being a young boy of music experiencing a glorious parade extravaganza for the first time. Nobilissimus captures the unbridled imagination while witnessing the color and pageantry of endless rows and columns of legions, complete with sparkling banners, flags and uniforms, followed by a building crescendo of a thunderous brass fanfare.
Latin for "most noble" Nobilissimus was one of the highest imperial titles in the late Roman and Byzantine empires. Very stately and regal in nature, the music begins slowly and softly by foreshadowing the main theme that comes at march tempo. the march style continues through four separate thematic ideas or strains for an overall form of: Intro-A-B-A-C-D(or trio)-A'-Coda.

Nobilissimus

Concert Band

Beginning in 1755, British Governor Charles Lawrence ordered the deportation of nearly 12,000 French Acadians from Nova Scotia who refused to swear allegiance to Britain, but wished to remain neutral. The British colonials adversarially viewed the Acadians as a threat because of their Catholic heritage and proximity to New France. The deportation included: capturing as many men as possible, breaking dykes, burning houses and farms, threatening families with bayonets, and shipping the Acadians to various locations around the Atlantic. About half of the Acadians died during the expulsion. Between 1764 and 1785 around 3000 Acadians sailed to Louisiana, where they arrived destitute having lost most of their property, and in many cases, family members. These Acadians are the ancestors of present day Cajuns of Southern Louisiana.

Each section of the music reflects a dierent emotional aspect of the deportation. The peaceful opening includes the French folk song “Les Huit Jours De Mai” (The Eight Days of May) but abruptly and violently shifts into a theme, in 7⁄8, that represents fear and uncertainty. Soon a “Theme of Hope” emerges paying tribute to the Acadian’s strength and determination to survive the ordeal. A slow middle section portrays calmness and dreams of a new life. The perilous journey continues with a recapitulation of the 7⁄8 theme but soon builds into a restatement of the “Theme of Hope”, now in major! The shifting tonalities suggest a new world with myriad possibilities and a bright future! L’Odyssée was commissioned by the Lâche pas Vermilion, (Vermilion Parish, Louisiana).

L'Odyssee

This grade 2 piece provides a great opportunity for young players to develop tone, tuning and phrasing, all while playing a pretty melody.  It also can serve an introduction to 7th and 9th chords as well as inversions and suspensions.  All parts are scored in the sweetest parts of the young players range and tessitura.  The 2nd clarinet part does not cross the break.     
NOTE:
Some truly beautiful sights come from the soft glowing light in the sky when the sun is below the horizon. Light gets scattered into the atmosphere creating beautiful setting sun landscapes, often accompanied by an amazing palette of colors. In the morning, the same happens. At Twilight's Calling is a short lyrical piece inspired by the magnificent views often present during this time of day. Colorful harmonies, such as major 7th and 9th chords, are used throughout, while suspensions and inversions provide additional harmonic interest.

Evoking a pleasing sense of calm, Solemnity is a lyrical work that includes a full palette of creative compositional ideas including extended harmonies, inverted chords, chromaticism, changing meters, phrase modulations and contrapuntal techniques. The dream-like ambience of the piece features two main themes and a contrasting third theme for an overall structure of: A-A'-Interlude-B-B'-A-A'-C-A''-Coda. The orchestration features separate woodwind and brass choirs, and doublings of similarly ranged instruments, as the themes are passed around most sections. The overall result is a uniquely unpredictable variety of color, texture and tonality throughout the piece.

Solemnity

Every effort was made to maintain the musical integrity of Rossini's score to this overture while producing a good sounding wind band arrangement. The main intention was to make this popular classical masterwork achievable and enjoyable for younger musicians.  Much attention was given to range and technique.
NOTE:
Many composers have produced entertaining and spirit lifting overtures, but hardly any best those of Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) in wit, sly contrasts of mood and boisterous endings. From their use for Italian opera in the early 19th century, they endure as staples of orchestral repertoire and have appeared in movies, television and cartoon high jinks. Rossini composed 34 operas by the time he was 31 and his crowning achievement, the French grand opera William Tell (1829), allowed him to retire at age 37, supported by the French government. The Barber of Seville (1816) is a witty tale of bribery, deception, disguise, and of course, true love. Interestingly, the overture from which this arrangement was made was not composed for the opera and contains no themes from it, but was used in two earlier operas. As with most of Rossini's overtures it begins with a slow introduction, then a fast section that includes memorable themes and a "Rossini crescendo", gradually getting louder as the harmony shifts between tonic and dominant resulting in a big bang ending!

The Barber of Seville

Old time fiddling is a genre of American folk music derived from British/European folk dances such as Jig, Reel, Breakdown, Waltz and Two-Step.  American fiddling continued to evolve into genres such as bluegrass, western swing, country and hillbilly jazz, the fiddle being a mainstay in all these styles.  Many composers of band music have found fiddle tunes to translate well for winds and this arrangement is no exception!  Following a brief introduction the clarinets and flutes are featured on the standard reel Soldier's Joy.  Next, the saxophone section renders a version of the familiar Arkansas Traveler.  The brass continue with the reel Red Haired Boy and the final tune features woodwinds and mallets with some toe-tapping western swing, Stone's Rag.  This two and a half minute medley is sure to be a real audience pleaser as well as total fun for the all the musicians!

Fiddler's Joy

Among the most exciting and well-loved overtures in the orchestral repertoire, this transcription has been meticulously scored for the modern symphonic band/wind ensemble.  String parts have been assigned to appropriate voices in woodwinds and brass in the exact way Glinka intended.  Articulations have been carefully added to enhance the technique and dynamics have been made consistent and clear.     
Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804-1857) was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country and is often regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music. His compositions were an important influence on other Russian composers, most notably Borodin, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov, who produced a distinctive Russian style of music. Glinka's second opera, composed in 1842, Russlan and Ludmilla, is rarely performed today, but the overture, which Glinka composed in 24 hours, has become a staple of orchestral repertoire. It is as much fun to play as it is to listen to and when you leave the hall you may find yourself whistling the tunes!

From small favors to kind words to charitable gifts, any act of human kindness is significant. And in today's often turbulent times it seems more important than ever that we strive to adopt an attitude of charity, generosity and love towards each other, and do our best to eliminate hate from our world. Featuring three main thematic ideas, That We May Give expresses human emotions, emphasizing the spirit of kindness and joy. The first theme, stated twice, evokes a sense of sadness, longing and uncertainty. The second theme, is majestic and inspires hope and unity. A short interlude features the beautiful Scottish folk song O Waly Waly, which is also used in the hymn The Gift of Love. A climatic return of the second theme, now with all stops pulled, leads to a soft and peaceful conclusion.
