"The River of Life and Death" (SAT divisi with solo) evokes the textures and moods of water, which plays a significant role in many cultures and religions due to its dual status of both life-bringer and destroyer.
Lasting approximately one and a half minutes (~1:30 min.), "The River of Life and Death" has three sections and ever-shifting tonality with a modal quality. The wordless text is written in IPA. While scored as SAT, all-female groups with strong low altos can perform it. It is appropriate for a wide variety of contexts, including concerts.

"In the Gloaming" evokes the dying limbo of fading inevitably from one state of existence into another, both day fading into night and life fading into death. Lasting approximately three and a half minutes (~3:30 min.), "In the Gloaming" follows a loose sonata form and, while simple at the beginning and end, becomes rather complex in the development section. It remains highly melodic and emotive throughout the entire piece. It is appropriate for a wide variety of contexts, including competitions.

"Destined for Adventure" brings to mind concepts that demand some level of gravitas and bombast, and the full-bodied sound of a (non-traditional) string quintet provides this. Shifting tonal centers allude to the different stages of a heroic journey and the unexpectedness of each. The minor ending reminds the audience that the adventure is destined, not achieved; someone still has to live out the adventure in order to bring about a triumphal ending. Lasting approximately five minutes (~5 min.), "Destined for Adventure" remains melodic and tonal despite its brief and frequent visits to other keys. While designed for five players, the parts can be doubled for a full string orchestra to enjoy. It is appropriate for a wide variety of contexts, including recitals.

"Unexpected Amusements Facilitating Hijinks of Chaotic Invention" is a short three-movement work for Bb clarinet, oboe, and bassoon. "Unexpected Amusements" introduces the quirky trio with its major stylings and chromatic flourishes, "Facilitating Hijinks" adds an air of sneakiness and extreme upper-register clarinet before incorporating an extended oboe technique, and "Of Chaotic Invention" rips through to the end with virtuosic solo moments and call-backs to the first two movements before ending on a delightfully squealing chord.
Lasting approximately four and a half minutes in total (~4:30 min.), "Unexpected Amusements Facilitating Hijinks of Chaotic Invention" is tonal despite its chromaticism and extended instrumental techniques, and it encourages acting at a couple points (which the performers can expand upon or ignore as desired). It is appropriate for a wide variety of contexts, including concerts and competitions.

"Beginning the Quest" uses the large range of a quartet of French horns to provide the proudly heroic sound befitting an epic journey. Different sections of the piece highlight the various challenges that a fledgling adventurer faces when embarking on a massive quest, yet the same thematic material continues to appear since the same unflagging spirit rises to overcome each situation. The end of the piece is grandiose but not the end of the expedition; this has merely been enough to establish our protagonist as a hero as they continue their journey. Lasting a little over three and a half minutes (~3:40 min.), "Beginning the Quest" is adventurously upbeat despite its minor key and is highly tonal with singing melodies. While designed for four players, the parts can be doubled for a larger group of performers to enjoy. It is appropriate for a wide variety of contexts, including competitions and recitals.

"When the Composer Is Silent" describes what happens when creators are unable or unwilling to create. A short piece requiring a large range, "When the Composer Is Silent" has a very 20th-century character to it as tonality and vocal register are constantly in flux and much is left to the performer, including all dynamics. It is appropriate for recitals, concerts, and competitions. Voice Range: Db3-C#6 / db-c#''' (Helmholtz notation for C#6).

  melancholy of what is, and the tension that arises from holding both at the
  same time.
    
    Lasting approximately five and a half minutes (~5:30 min.), "Hate Is
  Not Stronger" floats and pounds with both simple and technically
  demanding passages before culminating with a somewhat furious and bombastic
  ending that echoes into the ether. It remains highly melodic and impassioned
  throughout the entire piece. It is appropriate for a wide variety of
  contexts, including competitions.
