I wrote Keriah in 2023 in memory of Rabbi Richard Ruth, who was one of my most important mentors in high school. He was a kind and soft-spoken man, but he always had a clever sense of humor and a fun-loving spirit. He loved good music and good food. He passed away in 2023 while I was away at school, and I was not able to attend his funeral. I wrote this piece in an attempt to obtain some closure. "Keriah" is a Jewish tradition, in which one tears their garments after the loss of somebody close to them. This tradition is meant to represent the tear in your heart that comes from loss. The slow and mournful sections that bookend the piece represent grief and sorrow, while the lively and exuberant middle section represent Rabbi Richard's fun-loving nature.
