A collection of enjoyable string trios (Violin, Viola, and Cello) arranged for my ensemble friends who gather on Wednesday Mornings to play trios together. The works were selected to provide enjoyment in music-making for amateur chamber musicians as well as gigging professionals.

The collection begins with an "Ave Maria " by Josquin des Prez, followed by numerous arrangements of string trios by Corelli and Telemann. The book includes a beautiful arrangement of Bach's Aria from the Goldberg Variations. Selections from Trios by Boismortier, Gaetano Pugnani, and Pierre Crémont conclude the book.

Partlow to honor the spirit and celebrate the life of The Reverend Elizabeth Carpenter (December 22, 1940 - January 3, 2014) who served as rector of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Damascus, MD from 1997 to 2011, and moved through life with "Timeless Grace."

For Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3; Viola 1, Viola 2; Cello 1, Cello 2; Bass. It also includes a section for solo violin, solo viola, and solo cello. ALL parts are essential, though part 2 and 3 are less complex. About 7 - 8 minutes.

This colorful work brings together the joy of approaching spring, with the majesty and grace of the Adirondack forests and mountains. The work offers an opportunity to combine players of differing skill levels: from more basic parts to highly advanced solo moments for violin, viola, and cello. 

Program note: The work opens with the majestic scene of spring's first daybreak as the morning light shines on the snow-covered peaks of the Adirondacks. The sun, finally high enough in the sky to meet the snowy slopes and valley treetops, sets them ablaze.  And then it begins. Joyfully, a world comes back to life. Rivers thaw and unbound streams of fresh-melted water bounce, gurgle and surge. Animals stir, birds reappear, all rushing through the days, now relieved of the weight of winter. Hesitantly, bright-green sprouts, fuzzy buds, and flowers emerge. The springtime world dances. And all the while, the sun continues to rise, earlier and earlier, frantically, like a hound dashing to overtake its shadow. This galloping energy brings us to the majestic and final sunrise of spring, for summer will now insist on its turn. And as the morning fades into brilliant day, we are left with only a memory. A memory guaranteed to return. Next spring.

The collection begins with a “Panis Angelicus” of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, followed by  arrangements of string trios by Buxtehude, Albinoni, and Vivaldi. This edition contains a gorgeous arrangement of Bach's “Andante” from the Organ Sonata No. 4. It also includes two delightful movements from Joseph-Hector Fiocco’s Pièces de clavecin, and the complete Trio in G major by Boccherini. A more Romantic-era Trio by Mykola Lysenko concludes the book.

In the Spring of 2018, I spent three months on Cousins Island off the coast of Yarmouth ME as the KISMET Foundation Artist-in-Residence. Yarmouth Time reflects my impressions during this period of being surrounded by intense weather, nature, and beauty. After an introductory "sunrise," I capture my experience of two nor'easters with stormy gusts of wind and snow, leaping waves, swaying trees, and shifting gales. As the winds swirl away into calmness, a song arises as a nod to the warm hearts of the people of Yarmouth, echoing their welcoming town motto "Our Latchstring Always Out." Seabirds, gulls, and ospreys add their own commentary. Then, I tapped into the feel and enjoyment of walking the local trails, moving through nature, and taking in the scenery, bird calls, fresh air, and vibrant colors. Just before setting off on this walkabout, however, I inserted a sound from the Casco Bay seascape which was new to me  a lobster boat motor.  The work concludes with a sound-portrait of the frequently seen yet ever awe-inspiring pink-hued sunset over the eastern coastline.

Arranged for Oboe Quartet (Oboe, Violin, Viola, Cello) This new ensemble arrangement for Oboe and String Trio brings Bach's monumental work to life in a manner never heard before. It stretches our ear to hear deeply and imaginatively inside this timeless work of art, while paying tribute and illuminating the enduring mastery of Bach's form, technique, and expressive beauty. A suite of six variations plus the opening and closing Aria.

A rich weaving of color and movement. The initial distinct voices of oboe and strings gradually draw each other together into a vibrant dance of flow and repose.

The piece was written for a horn teacher who wanted an ensemble piece which would allow all the players, including for the fourth horn player, to shine and make music confidently.

The Water is Wide

Full Orchestra Score & Parts

This complete voice (contralta) and string quartet version brings out the full color and texture of the original full-orchestra version.  Each instrument part includes a small, cued staff above showing the vocal line and lyrics. This makes rehearsal and performances much easier to coordinate without a conductor. The original instrumentation is occasionally noted in the player's part to help with making decisions about playing style and use of vibrato. "Loco" refers to reverting back to a string part.

For advanced players as the work makes full use of each instrument, double stops, and extended ranges. Contains both score and parts.
Movements 1, 2, 4 were first performed March 2016 at the Elgar Society (North America Branch) Conference in Chicago, by the Grant Street Quartet.
