Kings of the East is an exciting free adaptation of the traditional Christmas hymn We Three Kings. It portrays a musical picture of the Magi approaching from the east as they search for the Christ child. Traditional instruments like goat-bells and cowbells signal the advancing caravan, followed by Middle Eastern instruments leading a lively dance rhythm in 7/8 time. The melody is played primarily by the low brass until the dance winds down and settles into quiet sounds of a solitary desert night. The lonely melody played by solo oboe and solo bassoon intermingles with snatches of "star of wonder". The orchestra then builds on these melodies to a climactic point before the 7/8 dance rhythm again signals the presence of the Magi. The composition finishes in a grand display of the Star of Wonder.
