A programmatic work inspired by the clanging sounds of leftover construction material for a new concert hall. By spelling the title with a "K," Klang invokes the klangfarbenmelodie (tone color melody) technique of Arnold Schoenberg. The melody is passed around note-by-note to different sections of the band throughout its five-part arch structure using compositional techniques like inversion and retrograde. The middle section invites three soloists to improvise over a B-flat mixolydian scale before the ensemble gradually builds toward a recapitulation of the opening material and a resounding finish.
