Clarior e tenebris is written in memory of Alan Lightbody, a wonderful musician and gentleman who passed away far too soon. The title translates to brighter from the darkness.  It serves to remind us that even in the darkness of loss, the light of hope shines. Clarior e tenebris adorns the top of the Lightbody family crest and it is my hope that each time this piece is performed it will serve as a means of remembrance to my friend. Rest well Alan.

Hymns of Praise

Located nine miles north of Ogallala, Nebraska, Lake McConaughy is a reservoir of the North Platte River formed by the Kingsley Dam. Constructed between 1936 and 1941, "Big Mac" as the lake is fondly called stretches 22 miles long and four miles wide at its largest point. Bearing the name of its primary proponent, Charles W. McConaughy, the lake provides hydro-electric power and a vital source of irrigation for the surrounding farmland and ranches. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission maintains a recreation area at the lake, visited by over 700,000 people annually. 

"Sunset on McConaughy" serves as a musical portrait of a well-known Nebraska landmark. The haunting orchestration generates imagery of a magnificent sunset, growing across the sky of an open prairie, reaching a glorious peak, and fading gently below the horizon. Accessible and poignant, this piece provides a great opportunity for musical storytelling, sure to be a favorite of performers and memorable for audiences.

Two Roads

The most important battle of the Civil War west of the Mississippi River took place in Northwest Arkansas over the course of two days in early March, 1862.  This battle involved over 20,000 soldiers and was unmatched in fury.  The Union victory ensured Missouri and the critical arsenal in St. Louis would remain under Federal control. Two Days in March (1862) is a musical portrait of those two days in which bravery and unquestioned valor intersect with the reality of war.  This piece includes parts for an offstage bugle and drummer and optional parts for a female chorus and piano.

This powerful selection would provide and excellent closer to a Memorial Day, Veterans Day, July 4th, or tribute to First Responders program.  The lyrical content references the Prophet's Call found in the Old Testament passage: Isaiah 6:8. The solo vocal line can be split between multiple singers if desired.

I Will Go

Written in celebration of the retirement of Chalon Ragsdale after 50 stunning years on the faculty of the University of Arkansas Department of Music.  Concerto No. 1, subtitled "Three Moods", was premiered in April of 2025 by the University of Arkansas Wind Ensemble, Dr. Chris Knighten conducting, featuring Dr. Aaron Ragsdale, Chal's son as the soloist.   Full of sparkling effervescence, the Finale movement, "Joyful" provides a showcase that puts the expressive versatility of the marimba as a solo instrument on full display.

At one time, 170 million acres of the United States were covered by prairies.  Only a fraction of that remains today, but the spirit of a wide-open spaces remains in multiple forms of art.  Prairie Adventure harkens back to a time where the call of the prairie inspired brave explorers to move beyond what was known in search of memorable adventures.
