Light appears to us in many ways. It can be beautiful and colorful, or dark and ominous. It can come in flashes or remain as a rainbow draped before our eyes. In this piece, Robert Adams depicts through music various types of light streaming through space; reflecting, refracting, growing and fading. He made use of beautiful, shimmering tone clusters and some mixed meter to construct a musical world of light. This is an excellent choice for introducing bands to dissonant clusters in a gentle way, and to playing in 5/8 meter. The three instrument families each represent a different character in the light we see, so, for school bands, it is also useful in teaching the instrument families.
