The term "Littoral Sanctuary" describes the image I found in
the music of this piece, where I took a different approach to titling it a
that is, instead of composing for a specific image, I let the image come to
me as I composed. The piece opens with a solemn, tolling E, reminiscent of a
church bell, and its short melody soon transforms into the image of a
tumultuous surf, undulating in waves toward the end. Thus, it evokes the
lonesome, but strangely ethereal, picture of an old church by the ocean,
still reminding a shoreside town of its ancient presence with its bells
ringing through the sound of the sea.
