This traditional Irish tune (also popularized as Danny Boy) is a perennial audience favorite in any context. Opening with a lyrical trombone solo, this lush arrangement maintains a traditional feel while incorporating shifting tempos, rubatos, lots of dynamic diversity, and the dramatic climax fades into a satisfying and restful ending. Using flugelhorn on the opening section works great and a harmon-muted section adds a nice color to the trumpet palatte. This fresh setting for brass quintet is a welcome addition to any program.
