Fox Dances (2025) is a song cycle on poems by Katharyn Howd Machan. Appropriate for collegiate or professional recitals themed around animals, seasons, or folk tales, this cycle follows a fox as the world comes alive around her in spring. Inspired by the fox's role--in both nature and folklore--as a fighter, an adventurer, and a trickster, these songs give the soprano a chance to embody playfulness, gratitude, and determination as they celebrate resilience in a harsh natural world. A Christmas song for people who hate Christmas songs. The piece gradually transforms from dark to transcendent, mirroring a shift toward accepting the inner and outer dark many of us experience around the winter solstice. A quotation from "Carol of the Bells" is developed to parallel this transformation. Being able to make peace with it—or overcome it, depending on your interpretation—is what drives the piece's form.

 This lush, sweeping, but ultimately gentle composition would pair well with a requiem on a concert program. It is about birth and death as times of transition, and is full of celestial images of the changing sky at twilight and dawn.

Suitable for fun-loving collegiate, a cappella community, and advanced high school choirs, this piece (or the entire set, available from the composer) would be a good fit for concerts themed around night, animals, childhood, and even Halloween.

With text by American poet Carl Sandburg, this evocative musical landscape features an artistic piano accompaniment and bold dynamic contrasts. Thematically, it explores our connectedness with nature through images of birds, embodying deep reverence and awe for nature without being romantic or sentimental.

Birds in a Looking-Glass

A fast, energetic, sometimes dark piece based on a Carl Sandburg poem of the same name. Suitable for many concert themes, including urban/city life, alienation and connection, light and dark, and humanity.

This piece is framed by the contrast between day and night in the poem's two stanzas--the same bridge bustling and busy by day and lonely, more intimate at night. But it's obviously not just about a bridge. To me, it's about the unseen lives of strangers--the volumes upon volumes of life stories contained in just a single snapshot of a city street. The poem hints at what these lives are like, but the details are up to interpretation--and that's where composers can bring their individual perspectives.

Since--to me--it's about our unspoken stories, I thought about how the daily grind of commerce can alienate us from those stories, and how the calm of night allows us (or, in uncomfortable cases, forces us) to reflect on them: the experiences we've had, and how they've shaped us. I approached the music from this standpoint. -NRK
