Lyric Interludes

"Lyric Interludes" is a collection of short, standalone character pieces I wrote several years ago. At the time, I was studying classical percussion and I was inspired by the pianistic marimba technique of Theodor Milkov to explore polyphony on the instrument. At the same time, I was undertaking a thorough study of traditional counterpoint both through theory coursework and my creative practice. Lightly modeled on Schumann's Album for the Young, these miniatures are like a garden of melodies: each intricate flower is small and self-contained, the colorful petals supported by lace like stems. As the pianistic approach to marimba remains a highly specialized, advanced approach, I have modified this collection to be better suited for the piano itself where these "fiori musicale" may be perused in pleasant leisurely diversion.
