This is a short piece that sounds like a folk song and explores a simple
  five note collection in e minor for beginning strings. The harder parts
  include some more leaps and perpetual motion.

Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and
  above the predicted astronomical tides.
    
    Of all the hazards that hurricanes bring, storm surge is the greatest
  threat to life and property along the coast. It can sweep homes off their
  foundations, flood riverside communities miles inland, and break up dunes and
  levees that normally protect coastal areas against storms.

Kedma was composed as part of the Assembly Quartet Pedagogy Project, an initiative focused on developing new, accessible works for intermediate saxophone-quartet players. The project aims to provide young musicians with compositions that are both challenging and rewarding, expanding their repertoire beyond traditional transcriptions.
 
The title Kedma means east in Hebrew, and the piece draws inspiration from Israeli dance styles, both traditional and contemporary. The word also plays on Kedem (“from a long time ago”) and Kadma (“before” or an upbeat in musical terms), reflecting the intertwining of these concepts in the music. Structured in an ABA form, Kedma maintains a consistent tempo throughout, while the middle section introduces longer note values and a more expressive character than the outer sections.
 
The opening features a four-note motif within a span of five sixteenths, inspired by rhythmic cycles found in Indian and Middle-Eastern music. This is complemented by an accompaniment based on polyrhythms, played through without ties, drawing influence from Joseph Schillinger’s rhythmic theories. The composition incorporates Middle-Eastern and Jewish musical scales, highlighting the saxophone quartet’s capacity for rich contrapuntal textures and a diverse sonic palette.

Saxaphone Quartet Quartet

In Mazurka (2022), my deep admiration and extensive study of Scriabin and Chopin meet in a new work that breathes life into the hallowed mazurka form—a form I’ve explored both at the keyboard and through in-depth analysis. Commissioned by and dedicated to the outstanding Anna Kijanowska, with support from WPTA Poland and the University of Silesia, the piece reflects the lasting influence of those composers on my own voice.
 
As a genre steeped in tradition and characterized by its distinctive rhythm, the mazurka provides the canvas for a series of aural reflections shaped by my engagement with Scriabin’s mysticism and Chopin’s poetic subtlety. The dance framework is reimagined through improvisatory gestures and shifting colors, revealing both a sense of nostalgia and modern vitality. Employing a condensed rondo form, the piece leads the pianist through territory that feels at once familiar and new—a continuation of the mazurka’s evolution seen through a contemporary lens.

Child’s Play captures the exuberance and imagination of childhood through an energetic dialogue between guitar and percussion. Rhythmic drive and lyrical reflection intertwine as the two instruments trade colors and gestures, creating textures that are both playful and sophisticated. The piece highlights Avner Dorman’s signature rhythmic vitality, harmonic color, and inventive interplay between timbre and pulse. Commissioned by Vivi Vassileva and Lucas Campara Diniz, it has been featured internationally in concert and video performances. Child’s Play invites performers to explore a wide palette of sound and character, and audiences to experience a spirited, modern concert duet.
