In Night Journey, Basford's superb handling of his forces, choir, baritone soloist and large wind orchestra provides us with a substantial forty-minute extended secular choral work in the tradition of Elgar, Finzi and Vaughan Williams. His innate ear for colour and sure sense of architecture makes his eclectic collection of texts from a variety of poets including Longfellow, Poe, Donne, Fletcher and Blake an evocative and memorable depiction of the passing of time between dusk and sunrise. His knack of writing eminently sing-able vocal and instrumental lines combined with his strong sense of harmonic movement engages us throughout from the gentle pastoral opening Prelude to the awesome final climax in the Hymn to Sunrise with three pairs of clashed cymbals. This is a work that is sure to live forever and become a classic in it's own right!

Night Journey

A New Songs Measure was commissioned by the Association for Music in International Schools, an organisation dedicated to giving young people opportunities for musical performance. Carroll's superbly approachable choral writing carefully takes into account the universal problem of choirs with more women than men making the work highly suitable for school and community use. Arthur O'Shaughnessy's poem, The Music Makers provides the text (as it did in Elgar's famous Oratorio), whilst Carroll's patriotic setting not only provides his typical fingerprint score but also a piece that will have your audience and players dancing in the aisle! This is Carroll at his most Irish, great fun and a work set to become a staple of any choir and band concert.

In November 2014 and January 2015 I visited London, England and whilst there attended services in Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral. Like many before me, I was impressed by the ambiance and solemnity surrounding the services. At about the same time Tim Reynish asked me to write a piece that could be played by a good high school band and as a result Cathedral Variations was born. 
 
Cathedral Variations is as the name suggests a set of variations on the English hymn tune All Praise To Thee, My God, This Night by Thomas Tallis (also known as The Tallis Canon) which was first published as a setting of Psalm 67 around 1561.

Blackwater

Cedric Thorpe Davie studied under Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob and later with Kodaly in Budapest. His compositional style is unequivocal in it's tonality, a style and craftsmanship he readily adapted to the film scores for Disney successes such as Rob Roy and Kidnapped. The setting of the traditional folk song the Wee Cooper O' Fife is of that genre and reflects the gentle charm, humour and down to earth character of this well loved Scottish composer. He treats us to an intricate but delicate masterpiece of scoring that depicts the values and tastes of a bygone era. The work was commissioned for the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland by the Scottish Amateur Music Association in 1979.

Variations and Fugue on 'The Wee Cooper of Fife'

For orchestral winds and percussion with optional saxes, this four movement symphony is a passionate, dramatic celebration of the Russian Orthodox Easter Festival on an expansive scale, employing authentic devotional material in a score of enormous sweep and power. The most important work yet by this master of wind writing.

Pascha

The Four Rossetti Songs were conceived as a sequel to Basford's large-scale cantata Night Journey. However, unlike Night Journey each of the four songs can be performed separately. Whilst owing much to the gentle song-writing skills of English composes Vaughan Williams and Ivor Gurney, these very individual pieces integrate perfectly the timbre and colour of the wind ensemble into the vocal line so exquisitely expressed in these beautiful verses by Dante Gabriel and Christina Rossetti. A perfect addition to the voice with wind instruments repertoire.

Four Rosetti Songs

Fractures

Lost Mountain was commissioned by the Inverness Wind Ensemble together with Lochaber High School Concert Band in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Culloden, although the work commemorates more the aftermath of that battle and its long-lasting effects on the people of the Scottish Highlands and Islands rather than any celebrations of the martial arts. The title is borrowed from the poem of the same name by Sorley MacLean, written after the second world war. In it, the poet laments the despoliation of the landscapes of his youth on the island of Raasay during that war as a potential symbol of the wider human losses of those years.

The Lost Mountain

Sympathetic word-setting and ravishing scoring of these four elegiac songs make a profoundly moving impression. A star work at WASBE and BASBWE 2007.

A very important piece.

The Winged Lion

A high-spirited single-movement ideal as a rousing concert opener or finale. Selective cross-cuing makes it available to a wide range of bands, and while it is eminently practicable for even fairly average players, no harm would come to it in the hands of rather good ones.

Intrada, Chaconne, and Chorale

Originally written for the Philharmonia Orchestra to open the Welsh Proms, this is a high-spirited, upbeat, exhilarating curtain raiser that really sets the mood of celebration. It's fast, furious, fun and loses nothing in the composer's re-working for the concert band.

Festivities Overture

Written for his former teacher Alan Hacker, this astonishingly profound, challenging score will vastly reward soloists and directors with the enterprise to take on its detailed complexities. Grange is a major international composer at the forefront of new British music and his reluctance to compromise is the greatest possible tribute to the integrity of wind music.
