We've all seen pictures of the Great Wall of China as it flows across the countryside. This piece captures the beauty and the fluid quality of the Wall in a stunning way, not using any "Oriental" references such as a reliance on the pentatonic scale, instead lovely tunes with rich harmonies.  Perhaps the Wall thrills us because it represents something beautiful that has universal appeal, a barrier that transcends borders and brings a sense of wonder to the residents of all nations.

"Blessed are the Pure of Heart" is a beautiful choral setting for SATB choir, brass quintet and organ. This iconic text from Matthew comes alive in a haunting setting that is appropriate for church or the concert hall. Accessible choral parts and idiomatic brass writing makes this work a must for all choirs. This movement is from a larger work, "The Beatitudes." The entire cantata is available with keyboard accompaniment or scored for full orchestra. Some individual movements are published separately, arranged for string quartet, brass quintet or just keyboards.

Zoltan Kodaly wrote his "Dances from Galanta" honoring the music of Slovakia.  Antonin Dvorak composed sixteen Slavonic Dances, celebrating the culture of Bohemia.  Brahms was enamored with the Hungarian bands he heard in Vienna, and therefore composed twenty-one Hungarian Dances.  The composer of this work, Asher Raboy, also finds himself fascinated by a nation and its people, but these citizens live only in the imagination.   The spirit behind the composition is the same as that of the giants who came before him, to capture some of the color and spirit of a nation.  And with that in mind, he offers this set of Dances from a Mythical Land.The piece opens with a procession.  The opening is romantic in spirit; slow, but flowing in style, as our celebrants enter the hall.  Then the dance begins in earnest, with a syncopated melody accompanied by quick fiddle work.  The melody and its accompaniment switch instruments quickly and often, as the dance builds in intensity and volume.  A new tune then appears, a little more angular, a little more chromatic, but full of energy.  The dance gets wilder still.  Finally, the first, fast theme returns; this time a little bigger than before, giving the party a satisfying ending.  The land represented in this piece is not wholly imaginary.  It represents the composer's roots (musical and biological) and his dreams.  It is his sincere hope that the audience will enjoy visiting this world as much as he does, and will find themselves frequent travelers to this mythical land.

From the earliest days of our relationship, my wife Katy wanted me to write a piece of music specifically for her.  She wanted something that she could perform and that would reflect her personality and our very deep bond. Some composers would be excited by this intimate kind of collaboration, but I found it intimidating.   I didn't want to pen a generic love song, but rather I wished to paint a compelling portrait of someone I love very dearly.  At the same time, it was important that this piece showcase Katy's rich musical talents.  The stakes seemed very high. Could you imagine the conversation if she didn't like the piece?   All I could say would be, "Honestly honey, I do love you.  I'll try harder next time." Who can live with that kind of pressure?  So I put off the composition for nearly five years.  Finally, I was running out of excuses. Then, one day, the two of us (plus dogs) took the weekend off to visit the beach.  Wherever sand and rock meet the ocean, that place is special to Katy.  I watched her there, relaxed and as happy as I've ever seen her.  And, as I observed her pleasure, the piece came to me.  I started writing.  Within a relatively short time, the entire work was done.

"Jericho" is an exciting fanfare for young bands.  From a larger suite for band called "Walls," it tells the story of the fall of the ancient city.  We hear the sound of the rams' horns that heralded the collapse of the city's defenses and the marching of the army as it circumnavigates the town.  The music ends while we are still listening to those otherworldly sounds, the miracle and strength of Joshua, not the sounds of battle.

This piece of chamber music is filled with delightful melodies and dance-like rhythms.  Although there are no actual Tangos in this piece, it still evokes the sound and the feel of the streets of Buenos Aires

A great concert opener, "The Rewards of Generosity" was written at the request of the Lincoln Theater in Yountville, California, to celebrate the renovation and re-opening of their concert hall. The work is dedicated to Donald and Lonne Carr, whose time, energy and love made the new hall possible. This piece is a celebration of the philanthropy of a remarkable community and an attempt to capture the joy that comes from seeing one's hard work turn a dream into a reality.
