This is an easy vocal arrangement of the popular Mexican Folk Song
  "El Cascabel". "El Cascabel" originated from the Mexican
  state of Veracruz. This arrangement is written for beginner mariachi. Every
  section has a solo that is very accessible and playable. Ranges and technical
  demands of young players have been taken into consideration in this
  arrangement.

Caminito De Contreras was Ranchera Polqueada recorded by Lucha Reyes, who is considered the first female mariachi vocal pioneer.  It is arranged for intermediate mariachi students due to the key and use of accidentals. The polka manico (strumming pattern) can be a challenge for some students. It is important that the guitarron player is solid on his timing and beat.

Vocal Solo

This is a beginner set of exercises to help your students develop their technique and speed. Start slowly at first and once the students have mastered their part, gradually increase the tempo. These exercises can be used as part of their daily warm-up routine. Violins are encouraged to use their 4th finger, but that is at the director's discretion.

This is an easy version for the beginner/2nd year mariachi of a corrido ranchera. A corrido is a story-telling song in the Mexican culture. This song is attributed to Samuel Lozano, a composer from the early 20th century. It is the story of a young man who is in love with a young woman. The woman leaves and returns a few years later, now a married woman and the young man is heartbroken. The song is for a male vocalist and is very playable. It gives the vocalist the opportunity to sing with emotion and use hand motions to express the feelings of the song.

El Relampago is a folk song from Mexico. It is very popular among folkloric dancers and folk groups. Ruben Fuentes in collaboration with Silvestre Vargas arranged this song for their "Sones de Jalisco" LP.  I heard the folkloric version by a visiting folk group (Los Chicahaustles) while I was in college. While the group was staying at the college for a South Texas tour, my mariachi and members of the folk group had a "palomazo" or jam session. We learned a lot from each other, and we even played some serenades around the college together. Several of the members have been friends. This arrangement is for beginner mariachi. An optional easy violin part is included, as well as an advanced armonia part that contains redobles. I chose not to include contra-tiempos on this arrangement as to not add a layer of difficulty to this piece. If you would like to add it, that would be your preference. I hope you and your students enjoy playing "El Relampago".

Mariachi band Flexible Instrumentation

La Cucaracha is a popular Mexican Folk Song. It's origins trace back to
  the 1800's, but it regained popularity during the Mexican Revolutionary War.
  This arrangement is for beginning mariachi, but a solid 1st trumpet player
  with a range up to high F# is needed.

This is an easy instrumental waltz for beginner mariachi. It is in the
  key of D and is very playable. Parts include 1st/2nd Violin, 1st/2nd Trumpet,
  Armonia and Guitarron.

Sonando

La Adelita is a medium-easy instrumental version of a traditional
  mariachi song. It is for young mariachi and is very playable.

El Carretero is a standard Son Jalisciense. It originated around the town
  of Cocula in the State of Jalisco, Mexico during the 1800's. The earliest
  known recording of this "son" is by Cuarteto Coculense in 1908.
  This arrangement can be played by advanced Junior High or High School
  mariachi. Parts include 1st and 2nd Violin, 1st and 2nd Trumpet, Vocals,
  ArmonAa and GuitarrAn.

El Carretero

This is a Medium Easy Medley of three popular Christmas songs. Noche de
  Paz, Los Tres Reyes Magos and Jingle Bells. This piece is suitable for 2nd
  year mariachi.

Popurri Navidenas

Cielo Azteca is an entry level original composition for the beginner
  mariachi. It is in the key of E minor. This song employs unique effects in
  the violins, trumpets and particularly the armonia.  Parts include Violins, 1st and 2nd
  Trumpets, Guitar, Vihuela and Guitarron.

La Serpiente was inspired by the popular mariachi standard "El Cascabel". Many young students attempt to play this song, but it is a difficult piece for novices. La Serpiente has a basic jarocho rhythm like "El Cascabel" but with easier manicos. Each section of the mariachi ensemble is featured and the song is very playable with students who have limited experience. I hope that you and your students enjoy "La Serpiente".

This is an easy instrumental song in the style of a bolero. A bolero is a
  romantic ballad that is very common in the mariachi genre. Violin and trumpet
  parts are in a comfortable range and armonia and guitarron parts are not
  complicated. This is a good introduction to the bolero for a young,
  inexperienced ensemble without the demands of a vocal line.

Noche Azul

El Abuelito is written for the entry level mariachi. It is in the key of
  D and it can be performed after four to six weeks of instruction. The violin
  and trumpet parts are in unison and all within the first five notes of the D
  scale. This is a great learning tool to help your mariachi gain experience at
  the very beginning.

This is an easy instrumental song in the son type. Parts include:
  Violins, 1st and 2nd Trumpet, Armonia and Guitarron. This is a prefect piece
  for an advancing 2nd year group.

Al Son Del Mariachi

Paso A Paso is an easy instrumental piece for beginner mariachi. As the
  title implies, the piece consists of stepwise melodies in the violin and
  trumpet parts. Violin and 1st trumpet utilize the first six notes of the D
  major scale. This piece also has some easy eighth note patterns. Parts
  include Violins, 1st and 2nd Trumpets, Armonia and Guitarrin.

Paso A Paso

El Marranito is an easy composition in the "son" style. It is written for the advancing beginner mariachi. It is based on the D major arpeggio. The violins have optional 4th finger A's and low C#'s. At 17 the 1st violin part has fingering dexterity, while the 2nd violin has repeated eighth notes. 1st trumpet range is up to a C# and the 2nd trumpets range is up to a G# on the staff. The trumpet line starting at 17 also has finger dexterity which might be challenging to some students.  The "armonia" parts are divided into easy without redobles and advanced with redobles. Guitarron fingerings are limited to A, D, E, F# and G and the rhythm pattern is a basic "son" line.

El Marranito

Primer Vals was one of the first pieces that I wrote for beginner
  mariachi. It is in the key of G and can be played with as few as four
  players. Students with a few months of instruction can perform this song
  as  their debut or part of their
  premier concert repertoire.

This is a beginner version of a traditional song from the Mexican state
  of Sinaloa that has been adapted by the mariachi. it is very playable and
  written with the limitations of a beginning mariachi musician in mind. It is
  my hope that you  and your students
  will enjoy performing this piece.

El Nino Perdido

El Matador is an original pasodoble for intermediate mariachi ensembles. Violins have a single part while the trumpets are in a duet. It is in the key of A minor with a modulation to the relative major key of C. It is suitable for ensembles with two to three years of experience.
