The Marimba Duet in B Locrian contains only those notes that are in the B Locrian scale, which is a B Minor scale with lowered 2nd (C natural) and 5th (F natural) degrees: BCDEFGA. The Locrian scale is one of the seven ecclesiastical or church modes (the others being Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian). Use of the Locrian mode, which has a diminished fifth (tritone) instead of a perfect fifth between its 1st and 5th scale degrees, is rare for entire compositions. However, Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) used it in sections of his 1910 Prelude in B Minor. Op. 10 No. 32, as did Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) in his 1911 Symphony No. 4. and Claude Debussy (1862-1918) in his 1912 ballet Jeux.
