Mary's Lullaby

Program Notes Mary’s Lullaby is an arrangement for SATB choir and chamber orchestra based on “Suo Gân,” one of the best-known traditional melodies of Wales. Its title is generally translated as “lullaby” or “lull song.” The tune appeared in print around 1800, although its composer is unknown; the familiar Welsh words were later preserved by the folklorist Robert Bryan. In its traditional form, the song depicts a mother soothing her child to sleep, promising protection from the dangers and disturbances of the world. The English text heard in this arrangement transforms that intimate scene into a Nativity meditation. Mary holds the infant Jesus and contemplates the seeming contradictions of his birth: the mighty ruler appears as a tiny child, the Prince of Heaven lies in a humble stall, and the promised Redeemer rests quietly in his mother’s arms. Shepherds, Wise Men, and angels surround the scene, yet the text never loses its personal focus. Beneath the wonder of the Incarnation is a mother singing softly to her child, even as she senses the suffering that lies ahead. Scored for SATB choir and chamber orchestra, this arrangement preserves the peaceful simplicity of the Welsh melody. The music unfolds as a gentle lullaby rather than a grand proclamation, allowing the warmth and natural grace of Suo Gân to carry the text. Choral sonorities and restrained orchestral writing gradually deepen the atmosphere, suggesting both the stillness of the manger and the quiet radiance of the holy birth. The closing “Lullaby” returns the work to its most human image: Mary holding the child near and singing into the silence of the night.
