The Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland, are an awe-inspiring sight.  Rising nearly 400 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, they are primarily made up of Namurian Shale and Sandstone, hence the title of this Emerald-inspired composition.  The slip jig in the second part gives way to soaring harmonies meant to evoke the steep drop off of the cliffs themselves.  The traditional sounding melody is augmented by modern harmonies and grooves in the lower strings, and an optional guitar part gives the tune some added zest.

Joshua Norton (1818 – 1880) was an eccentric resident of San Francisco who, in 1859, proclaimed himself "Norton I, Emperor of the United States". Although Emperor Norton had no formal political power, the citizens of San Francisco treated him deferentially. Local newspapers printed his frequent proclamations, and currency issued in his name was honored in his favorite establishments. He also received free ferry and train passage, and sympathizers and well-placed friends helped pay his rent and provided free meals. During his life, many merchants in San Francisco capitalized on Norton’s notoriety by selling souvenirs bearing his likeness.
 
 
When he passed away, 10,000 people lined the streets of San Francisco to pay him homage. Emperor Norton has been immortalized in the literature of Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, Christopher Moore, Charles Bukowski, Neil Gaiman, and others. This regal (but slightly off-center) piece for strings was composed in his honor.

"Harvest Carol" is an excellent addition to your winter concert program if you are in need of a celebratory, festive but non-denominational piece of music.  Exploring different bowing techniques such as spiccato, staccato, and marcato, "Harvest Carol" is an opportunity to feature each section of the orchestra as the melody is passed from lower to upper strings and back again.

Composed by fiddler Clayton McMichen with 'Slim' Bryant in 1935, "Georgiana Moon" has been recorded by dozens of artists in many genres.  This arrangement for strings evokes the style of orchestration heard in jazz orchestras, suggesting Golden Age Hollywood and the Great American Songbook.
