This, the first of anywhere between 41 to 50 symphonies, was written by an eight-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) in 1764-5 in London. Mozart was already recognized as a child prodigy performer and this symphony displays both simplicity and hints of the master to come. This is a perfect selection for children’s concerts and to ask audiences “What were you doing when you were eight?”

When CBS Sunday Mornings premiered January 28th, 1979 it began just as it has since, with Gottfried Reiche’s trumpet fanfare Abblasen. The piece is derived from Elias Gottlob Haussmann’s 1727 portrait of Reiche and the manuscript in his left hand. This portrait can be found in the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum in Leipzig.

This edition achieves two goals: preserving the iconic performances of Smithers, Severinsen, and Marsallis while providing this short piece in all twelve keys for all standard band and orchestra instruments. This way musicians of various abilities can perform this historic work in their best-sounding key while challenging themselves with the rest.

Scott Joplin's 1908 work Wall Street Rag arranged for Brass Quintet from the piano original. This is a notable piece due to its program, where worried brokers are eased by hearing "genuine negro ragtime". It's a historical snapshot of the impact and charm of Joplin's music, and this arrangement helps bring it to more ears.

While Sousa maintained ties with Masonry throughout his life, this march highlights ties to the Shriners. It is dedicated to the Almas Temple and Imperial Council, Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in Washington D.C.

Our national march and Sousa’s magnum opus. Despite its enduring legacy, this march features many aspects not typical of Sousa’s other marches.

John Philip Sousa’s distinct New Mexico (March) is a tribute to the 47th state and dedicated “To Governor R. C. Dillon and the people of New Mexico”. Sousa used a handful of songs throughout, most notably Elizabeth Garrett’s O, Fair New Mexico (whose father killed Billy the Kid). There are many unusual moments for Sousa, such as the Trio and Rallentando, which made this march a joy to explore while arranging.

Patriots March (Patrioten Marsch), Op. 8 was written in 1845 and the referenced edition was the piano reduction published by Pietro Mechetti. It is Strauss II’s first known march. I hope this arrangement makes this piece more available to performers and listeners alike.

Sousa’s first commercial success. It was initially rejected by publishers Stopper and Fisk but sold well under Harry Coleman.

Johann Strauss II’s brilliant Evening Star Polka, Op. 249 was written in 1861 and the referenced edition was the piano reduction published by Carl Haslinger quondam Tobias. It was written for the Vienna Artists’ Association “Hesperus”. I hope this arrangement makes this piece more available to performers and listeners alike.

Symphony No. 1 in E-flat Major

As a composer who plays the euphonium I often find that my peers and I are victims of the misconception that bass instruments are not capable of agility, grace, or, in some cases, musicality. Au contraire! While the standard is to teach bass instruments to support the “more able” ones we are more than capable. I was finally given the exigency to write a work disproving these thoughts when contrabassoon enthusiast Kristen Lichtenthal said I should write a work for her instrument. This work has two basic ideas: the first is to display the virtuosity capable of a contrabassoon, the second is to offer a light-hearted touch to an instrument typically brought in for more serious-natured works. Although this work was originally intended for contrabassoon but I have no qualms about it being performed on bassoon. - Matthew Nunes Orlando, April 2014

A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Foster”, “Homage to Pittsburgh”, or “The Belle of Pittsburgh”.

It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion. A quite difficult one to arrange!

This march features some of Sousa's most difficult runs - trumpets beware! The Final Strain's woodwind obbligato has been divided between both parts, and performers may want to ease off the tempo here to help with clarity.
