Trio for Flute, Vibraphone, and Cello
Melancholia can be understood as the sorrow of grieving for something that was never truly possessed. As the melody dissipates into the wind, so too do these quiet hopes.
For me, music and movies have always been the way that I allow myself to feel deep emotions. Whether it be sorrow, anger, or even immense excitement, I’ve rarely felt comfortable openly expressing these emotions, and instead will trap them inside. Music is the release- the deep sigh of relief- as I finally feel them.
In the final moments of the piece, there is a moment of silence, reminiscent of those commonly observed at community mournings. In this space, permit yourself to fully feel any emotions you may keep trapped. Allow yourself to mourn these unspoken losses.
