The eye of a storm is a very common idiomatic and storytelling device. Something about the idea of peace and tranquility in the midst of chaos has held deep value to artists for decades. This piece, while not directly tied to a given emotion, is meant to serve as a more literal imagining of what a trip through a hurricane would feel like. Surrounded on each end by a relentless flurry of notes, the middle "eye" section of the peace serves as a melodic break before being thrown back into chaos. Compositionally, this piece is also a departure from my usual melodic and tonal style, featuring several atonal and odd rhythmic sections, much like the unpredictable weather expected from a storm. Sometimes in our lives, it can feel as though we're drowning in a sea of uncertainty and stress, unable to help ourselves. When this happens, many people shut down and become trapped inside their mind. Identity is a key factor to the sense of belonging we yearn for as humans. It helps to separate us from other animals on the planet, as each and every one of us has our own unique voice, insight, mind, heart, and soul. But in order to find our identities, we have to find our way through that sea of uncertainty. We have to emerge from the depths to find our true selves. For those of you reading/hearing this that are still stuck in the sea, just remember that there is always a reason to fight. A reason to push through. A reason to keep going.

Emergence

The Lonely Satellite is a narrative personification of the relationship between the Earth and its moon. The Earth, being the only known planet that contains life, is represented by the playful melody introduced by the violas. From a scientific standpoint, the moon has a vital impact on the continuing existence of life on Earth. However, from a more human perspective, the moon is often characterized as lonely or distant, often being used as a symbol for sadness. The melancholic flugelhorn melody is my musical representation of the moon. However, throughout the piece, this theme slowly gets brighter and brighter, eventually joining the Earth in jubilant celebration as the moon realizes the importance of its influence on our lives. The piece ends with an intertwined passage in which both themes play at once, complementing and reassuring each other before reaching a bright and joyous ending.
