Short Themes from a Ship Overseas is a series of short pieces for string orchestra (originally written for guitar quartet) that explores a sense of wonder that is invoked by a dream of sailing over the vast open seas and oceans of the world. At some point in one's life, the idea of sailors, pirates, and treasure is an inspiration that fuels imagination filled with adventure. These pieces explore that concept in a musical form and transfer these ideas using themes, textures, and ideas that are inspired by the open seas. The entire series is adventurous and great fun for all ages as parameters are shaped to fit the theme and also innovate. "Memory of a Shanty" is a melodic focused piece in which a memorable tune returns throughout the piece. It is reminiscent of a shanty that sailors would sing while exploring the open seas in centuries before.
