A fun and energetic 4-Minute flute solo (which also works well on violin) which makes a great impression on audiences at recitals and performances. It offers practice in rhythmic skills such as syncopation and more complex meters while painting the picture of a mermaid singing on the rocks and frolicking in the waves. Ranging from C#4 to F6, it avoids the low B and the upper half-octave of the flute range.
Inspired by the playing of rock flutist Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), it covers the three "Bs": there's a lively, Baroque-sounding "Bach" section, a syncopated "boogie" section, and a "Balkan" inspired section in alternating 7/8 and 9/8 time signatures, all framed by a haunting, recurring slow motive. I've written in the subdivisions of the Balkan section (e.g. 2+2+3+2) to help navigate the challenging time signatures. Listening to the demo should help with the syncopated and Balkan sections - they are easier to feel than read for many.
