Originally written as a fanfare for homecoming royalty, this piece conveys the spirit of supreme confidence and exultance.  While based around some basic rhythms and a strong clear melody this piece will challenge your players when performed at tempo.  There is also a slightly more range accessible version in the key of F.

This triumphal piece is meant to evoke a regal feeling and celebrates the spirit of strength and unity.  It opens and closes with a fanfare and revolves around two prominent themes played throughout the piece.

  Bigelow's "The Washing of the Spears" suite for concert band opens
  with a bold brass fanfare and then proceeds to run through a variety of
  emotive motifs- building to a vigorous climax and ending in a reflective, yet
  hopeful tone.

Isandlwana

Inspired by the world's most famous table top roleplaying game, "Of Swords &amp; Sorcery" reflects the composer's experiences during multiple sessions of playing at home with friends. 
The first movement, "Into the Fray," represents rushing into the jaws of danger and adventure.  The excitement is broken up with a suspenseful interlude before the tension breaks in a presto section at the end of the movement.  
The second movement, "City of Splendors," is a dance movement that represents the sights of a medieval market or fair from the perspective of one wandering through it.  
The final movement, "Journey's End," is a triumphal march in a Williams-esque style that represents the successful conclusion of the adventure.

Of Swords & Sorcery

The first movement from Bigelow's "The Washing of the Spears"
  suite is a bold, aggressive statement- heavy on brass and percussion, with
  plenty of woodwind runs on top.  The
  movement portrays Lord Chelmsford's army as it crosses the Buffalo River at
  the start of its invasion of Zululand in 1879.

The second movement from Bigelow's "The Washing of the Spears" suite for concert band is a short passage that paints a picture of the very close platonic love that existed between Lt. Col. Anthony Durnford and Miss Frances Colenso at the time of the Anglo-Zulu War.  it opens with a martial motif that represents Durnford and follows with a lilting melody, representing Ms. Colenso.  The two motifs are intertwined, ending with a slightly sorrowful foreshadowing of Durnford's impending death at the Battle of Isandlwana.

Named for the school district in which the composer first learned his
  craft, Bethel Overture opens with a bold brass fanfare and then proceeds to
  introduce various themes and rhythmic ostinatos until they are all woven
  together in an exciting climax audiences are sure to enjoy!

Bethel Overture

The capture of Pegasus Bridge during the D-Day invasion in 1944 was one of the most daring and flawlessly executed airborne operations of WWII.   This piece is written to capture the sense of suspense and excitement of those airborne troops as they flew over the English Channel to capture Pegasus Bridge on that day of days.

Pegasus Bridge Overture

A piece written to convey the feeling of flight through the use of driving energetic passages and broad soaring sections. "In the Company of Eagles" is dedicated to the Allied airmen of the First World War.  Appropriate for flight and/or war remembrance programming.

"Parade of the Warriors" was written for the Spanaway Jr. High "Warriors" band in 2006.  It makes heavy use of various recurring themes in order to present the concepts of structure and motifs to students and for easily engaging the ear of the audience.  Students will enjoy rehearsing and performing this challenging yet achievable piece!
