Dance of the Makam is inspired by the melodic system of Turkish traditions encompassing both composition and performance. Turkish music based on the Makam is often composed of many melodic families that outline similar modes, tunings, and tetrachords, but are often composed and played in slightly different forms or variations. In this piece, I chose two "modes" to outline in the first and second half of the piece. I hope you enjoy this dance, inspired by the Turkish melodic system of the Makam!

Jailbreak is a high-energy, fast-paced work for young orchestra, arranged in 2005 from the concert band version. This piece is based on two distinct motives which appear individually several times, and later in the piece these motives overlap. Often young students have lots of excitement and energy, and this work gives them an opportunity to harness that energy in a musical and exciting way, while still helping to develop their playing skills.

Jailbreak

The 2026 Year of the Fire Horse is one associated with intense energy, passion, quick changes, action, and speed. The horse symbolizes strength, freedom,
and perseverance. In terms of symbolism, fire only enhances these traits. This piece is accessible to younger bands while not compromising in its ability to deliver excitement. It features three main melodic ideas based on both minor and major pentatonic scales. I hope you enjoy the bold spirit of The Year of The Fire Horse!

Sivivon is a Jewish folk song traditionally performed during the Hanukkah season. This arrangement is written specifically for younger bands to be able to learn the dance-like style of this piece successfully. With spirit and excitement, I hope your students enjoy this arrangement of the Hanukkah classic, Sivivon!

Patriot Procession is a celebratory processional for young orchestra, arranged from the concert band version in 2025. This piece is dedicated to the students and band directors of the 2021-22 Rawlinson Middle School Band, who had to overcome many difficulties in the years following the Covid pandemic. Their perseverance, dedication, and patriotism inspired me to write a work to celebrate their accomplishments as they continue in their musical endeavors. I hope you enjoy the majestic character of Patriot Procession!

Patriot Procession

Las Ventas is a pasodoble inspired by the historic Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain. Written with two distinct sections, the first half of this piece is inspired by the bullfighting which would occur in the arena. The second half is inspired by the architectural beauty and grandness of the structure itself, and is intended to portray its majestic quality. The differences in style between the first and second half are united by several motives in which the melodic material is based on in both sections. I hope you enjoy the Spanish character of this pasodoble, Las Ventas!

Europa Fanfare is written for concert band and pipe organ. After completing an Astronomy course under Cheryl Lawler, I was inspired to compose a piece that had to do with the possible exploration of extraterrestrial life. Europa is one of the 4 large Galilean moons that orbit Jupiter, and many scientists believe that life may exist beneath the icy surface of this moon in a saltwater ocean that is kept liquid from tidal flexing from Jupiter's gravitational force. This piece utilizes blazing speed, polytonality, powerful fanfares, and smooth harmonic chord progressions as musical characteristics which I hope to portray the place where extraterrestrial life just may exist.

This piece seeks to place the listener into a peaceful, calm dream. The piece begins with soft rolls on the vibraphone with the flute player adding melodic material over the smooth backdrop of the vibraphone. Later there is a small solo section with each player, and it returns to the dream-like state in which it began.

Twilight Skies is a prelude for piano. It begins softly and slowly and utilizes set theory. Gradually it shifts to faster and a more active style as it moves to polytonal harmonies. It ends similar to the way it began.
