Midnight Tales is an A-B-A style piece, with the A sections representing
the beauty and calmness of the night and the B section symbolizing the fear
of the night. The piece starts in G major, and this section is meant to be
like a lullaby, which is what the tempo marking translates to in English.
However, by measure 27, the piece switches to the relative minor of E. The
flute and oboe begin with an ostinato heard throughout which is to represent
the constant uneasiness of those who fear the night. The reprise of the A
section is the lullaby heard at the beginning with a full quintet moment,
followed by the ending with the individual the lullaby was sang to finally
falling asleep.
