Midsummer Pavanes is a work that begins in mourning and ends with joyous celebration. It commemorates the life and work of a dear friend and mentor. An opening dirge gives way to a cantabile theme that is later heroically restated in the brass. The piece includes touching solo moments for trumpet, saxophone, and horn, as well as engaging writing for the percussion. This 9 minute piece was commissioned by a consortium of high school, community, and college groups from across the U.S. and Canada.
