First published in 1912, this tune has become an upbeat staple of Hanukkah celebrations around the world. The round in the second half subverts expectations and may prove a welcome challenge for young groups.

Pomp and Circumstance

Some goblins have gotten into your basement and are wreaking havoc in this fun, chaotic piece for beginning Concert Band. Great for a Halloween performance or just a rousing good time in general. The opening represents goblins hiding behind boxes in the middle of the night, waiting for the right time to start their mischief. The goblins get loose in measure 33, trashing the place and increasingly becoming an irritant. The mark tree is their magic, and the last 12 bars is the owner coming down to the basement in an effort to chase the goblins out once and for all.

Clarinet parts do not cross the break in "Goblins in the Basement", and there are instances where low brass/reeds have the melody. The Percussion 3 part (amusingly named "Chaos") is more a guide than a hard-and-fast rule of when to play. Use whatever percussion instruments you have at your disposal (i.e. slide/siren whistles, ratchets, frying pans, etc.) to make this piece your own. Dissonance here is not a bug but rather a feature to be embraced.

Goblins in the Basement

NEW! Flex Score Arrangement of "Joy to the World", a Christmas classic!

This arrangement of "Joy to the World" is the latest installment in Miller Music Creations' flex score series. A Grade 2/2.5 piece, this arrangement is flexible not only with its instrumentation but also with length. While this piece should ideally be performed in its entirety, measures 1-20 can be played as a shorter excerpt should it better fit the needs of your performers. The repeat is optional. Measures 16-20 can be played as an introductory tag should you wish. Part 3 carries the melody for a brief time starting at measure 21. The challenging aspect of this passage will be the "round" entrance of Part 2 one measure later. Care should be taken to ensure Part 2 doesn't panic and start playing at the same time as the lower voices.

With flexible parts and a wealth of musical options, this arrangement is easily adapted to fit your ensemble's needs.

The King's Feast

In the middle of the night, an urgent S.O.S reaches a lone ship traversing the sea. Can the good ship Concert Band rescue them in time? "S.O.S!" is a great way to introduce students to staccato and legato articulations (and a variety of other musical techniques) with a consistent rhythmic pulse of three short notes followed by three long notes and then three short notes again. This piece also features optional parts for thunder sheet and rain sticks should you have a large percussion section.
